Reply to Seeking Advice For Working As an Employee at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health by DarkCaprious
I was an student turned employee and I can tell you Hopkins is a hot mess. All of my classmates from our grad program who stuck around to work there post-grad have since fled their roles to get paid a fair wage.
Getting into classes isn’t super hard and tbh the coursework is pretty easy if you’re not pursuing biostats tracks. It’ll just be slow-going if you’re hoping to only use the money they provide for classes.
If you’ve been in the workforce at all and aren’t coming straight from undergrad, you may find some of the student population to be a bit insufferable. As the #1 school of public health, it tends to attract a lot of incredibly wealthy students with little world experience or genuine empathy for the population that Hopkins serves. You’ll find plenty of great students to chat with, too, though!

To be fair, you’re both right.
People on this sub are pretty protective of the city OP and most of the questions we get are from out-of-town folks who have some pretty deeply rooted biases against Baltimore. We can be a little mean when we get another post asking about safety because it’s over asked. Sorry this person came at you so hard 😅
I’d recommend searching safety and regions on the sub! Tons of posts with detailed responses exist and are easy to find. There also is a great crime dashboard you can check out here.
I’d also suggest googling segregation in Baltimore and redlining (white L, black butterfly, etc). I know that doesn’t mean much to you as a delivery driver but as a student in the region, I think it’s critical for everyone to be educated on.
Baltimore has a long and rich history that helps explain what neighborhoods have higher crime, etc.

LOL the implication that anyone who cares about poor people must also be poor and jobless. 😂😂😂 I have a job and I pay my taxes so that people who have less can receive the help they need.
It costs $0 to not be a jackass 🤷🏻♀️

I’d highly recommend searching the Baltimore subreddit for “things to do in Baltimore”. There’s about a hundred posts and it saves us time from restating things we’ve already said.
Same with safe neighborhoods, places to eat, best dive bars, etc. there have been some really great discussions even in the last couple days I think would really benefit you!
I’d figure out what part of the city you’ll be in, too, because your close options will differ between Locust Point, Fells Point, Mt Washington, etc. Baltimore isn’t a very connected city - our public transit system leaves a lot to be desired and we’ve got pockets of fantastic neighborhoods that are unfortunately surrounded by blocks I would not walk alone at any hour of the day. That doesn’t mean the whole place in unsafe, just that you should look into the safe neighborhoods. I’d hate to hear someone tried to walk to the Edgar Allen Poe house after sunset 🙃
We’ll be happy to have you! Hopefully you find some good spots

Cozy Corner in Mt Vernon!! It’s a cash only restaurant run by a little old lady. Get the honey ginger green tea and any food item you get is fantastic

Reply to Moving to Baltimore for grad school at Johns Hopkins, which neighborhoods close to campus would you recommend living in? by DvrthKen
If you opt for Mt. Vernon, keep in mind that the bus route stops at the Monument next to Peabody, so look close to that. Otherwise, Hampden is nearby and Charles village is also well-loved.

Yeah, Hopkins is definitely a place you work for a year so you can get access to a job that actually pays you market value.
