Keep them occupied and maintained. A few years abandoned and neglected and the roof starts to go or windows break. Once the weather starts to get in it’s all over.

I’ve seen some say he was from Monessen due to the lyric, but others said he wasn’t. If I ever run into him I’ll ask.

It’s easy to say “just tear down all the old buildings”, but there’s a big expense in tearing it down and acquiring the property from the owner. Local government can’t just take your property. If the owners keep paying the taxes, you have to make a deal with them to keep it. Brownsville is the same way.

Watch out for falling buildings.
It’s a shame what’s happened to that town. In the 50’s and 60’s it was booming. My mother graduated from Monessen High school in the 50’s with about 300 students. Now they barely have 50.
Robocop and Striking Distance were both filmed in Monessen.
Tom Savini has a special effects school at Douglas Business there.
Frances McDormand graduated from Monessen HS.
The Coolio song “I Remember” has the line “runnin through the streets of Monessen PA.” He wasn’t from here, but someone in his band was.
That’s all I can think of for now.

It’s just how each language has its own nuances. In Spanish, the adjectives come after the nouns.
A long time ago, someone decided to do it that way. Everyone else agreed that was pretty good and they kept doing it. That’s how language works.
Me and Joe went to the park means basically the same as Joe and I went to the park, but only one is correct.

Reply to Eli5 Why gas turbine can rev at >10000 rpm but diesel engine red lone at 3000-4000 rpm? by sepientr34
A Diesel engine, or any piston engine is limited by the linear speed of the piston. When the fuel air mixture is ignited, the flame front travels around 4000 ft/min. The piston can’t travel any faster than that. The stroke of the engine and the rpm determine how fast the piston is going.
An engine with a short stroke can rev much higher than one with a long stroke. A diesel engine tends to have a very long stroke to get the high compression ratios, hence a low redline. A small motorcycle engine has a short stroke and can rev much higher.
Rotary/wankel engines don’t follow this rule.
Turbines have a different combustion system in stages which allows it to go higher rpm.

No. Animal control is usually under professional services. The borough appoints someone to handle that. In the smaller towns there’s usually one person or company that covers a large area.

It’s like carbon dioxide and sodium bicarbonate. Bi and do both mean two in Greek or Latin.
We should start a movement to change bicycle to dicycle. But then it would get shortened to “dike” and that might cause problems.

Reminds me of the time I delivered a pizza to a building fire.
Dilapidated wooden building in town caught fire, so they let it burn down while preventing it from spreading. Ambulance guys had just called in a delivery before they got the call so I ended up taking it to them at the fire.

By the same standards a grasshopper is stronger than you.

Also, when you read something try writing out what it means and draw a picture of it. They say that helps engage different parts of the brain and lets you remember it in different ways.
