Reply to Are Barbour Coats are worth the price or is there a brand y’all have found that matches? by ThisIsNotGumpy
Yes.
They’re excellent jackets. Personally I prefer the ones that are less waxed but the style you’ve picked is a classic for a reason. I’ve had mine for 12 years now - my parents both have theirs from the 70s and they are still going strong. Get one big enough you can layer up underneath it. Barbour will also do repairs for you for very reasonable prices.
Don’t buy one if you’re in a warmer climate though (godfather couldn’t bear to leave his and took it to Florida with him where it started to smell so badly he had to relegate it to the garage.)

Solovair don’t do shoes like OP wants though. They do a wide range of colours but that’s it, really - the most untraditional silhouette they sell is their monkey shoe which is just a shoe-boot with contrast stitching, or their single-buckle monk which is, I think, only available in their womens range (but I haven’t looked for a while so might be wrong). Good shoes but this isn’t really their wheelhouse.

Your price range is the most important question here. If you’re not looking to spend more than £250 - just go with the doc martens. They’re good shoes and with proper care they can last a really long time. Additionally, many more expensive brands that this sub considers BIFL aren’t going to be doing ‘trendy’ makes like this because it’s not timeless and thus doesn’t appeal to their base of people looking for shoes for life. The main issue with these shoes is going to be the metal hardware - in some years time you might see that starting to degrade, but if you keep it dry and clean (and salt free in the winter) I think there’s no reason they shouldn’t last or that they won’t be repairable should something happen.

Reply to When did this sub go from advice and talks of quality to survivors bias posts? Is there a sub that better matches how this was years ago? by xSympl
I think a great way to improve this sub would be for people to: a) get a grip when it comes to lifespan vs useage, ie understanding that if it only gets used once every two years and it still works great it might not actually be bifl, it might just be stored correctly b) realise that care and storage are 50% of why things last, ie, stop tumble drying your clothes, and c) letting go of the boring knee jerk anti-China sentiment. there are loads of skilled workers in Asia & there are sweatshops producing clothes in the USA! you might be more likely to get a better quality product if it’s made in the US, but that’s just because statistically more things are made in China! It doesn’t mean that China = automatically bad.
