Honestly, I just wander the stacks and grab anything with an interesting-looking title, cover, and blurb. It's the library; if I end up not liking it, I don't finish and return it early and have lost absolutely nothing.

The library, and it's even free.

Maybe I could have done my homework and avoided this, but I went into Lilac Girls expecting a nice novel about female friendship during a war or something. I was not in any way prepared for the extremely graphic depictions of Nazi atrocities.

What's your motivation for reading them in English? Those are extremely well-known books; there must be Norwegian translations available. And wanting to read the original is understandable, but where does that leave War and Peace?
If you just want to read the books, read them in Norwegian. If your motivation is to improve your English, start with easier books (young adult, and/or things you've already read, maybe) and then work your way up to more challenging material.

Wolf Hall. I still keep thinking I'll go back to it someday, but I gave it two solid tries and just couldn't.

I'm up to the C's and loving it so far. I don't want any spoilers so I'll probably avoid this thread.

Reply to Books for a Seven-Year-Old Boy who's Struggling to Read by Chai-Mei
Elephant and Piggie books are extremely popular with 7 year olds, and most of them are at a late kindergarten/early first grade level, which should be about right for a struggling seven year old.
