It was intimidating the first time because the instructions say it can brick your phone, but to be honest it was pretty easy. Basically it's just copy paste the instructions in a command line tool. What is nice is there is updates weekly, so security patches are up to date. Those are click and forget from within the phone (like normal updates) and just version updates require the command-line again, but the second time it's way less nerveracking!

An open source operating system based on Android. It is basically like Android just it's not build by Google. But because of it, there are builds for hardware not otherwise supported!
Like there is still support for the Galaxy SIII

It's supported by lineageOS so you can run Android 12 on a Fairphone2 (2015). Apparently Fairphone themselves supports Android 10, which considering they started on 5.1 is not bad at all!

Mine has fallen on the road while riding a bike. Screen didn't crack. 10/10 would recommend.
