Gatsby is a challenging read. To me, there is no shame in using Cliff's Notes or some other supplemental material to deepen understanding when reading great literature.

I recommend the tragedies over the comedies. Tragic themes transcend time and societal change, but humor doesn't. That's why I find the comedies more difficult to relate to and enjoy.

Not entirely true. Certainly private colleges and universities will require transcripts to review and can reject based on low grades. Even the state universities are going to look at transcripts; and while they may still allow for matriculation, low grades are likely to affect qualifying for certain financial aid.
