i wrote stuff down on a legal pad. i rarely left my desk without it because i would often be stopped and asked for something (i was the data and reports guy on a floor with several hundred people)
i crossed stuff out when done or add a short note if it was a work in progress and i had taken an action or was waiting for someone
every few days i would transfer all the open items to a new page with the date at the top, prioritizing as i did so.
i may not have been the best and brightest data and reports person but i would have to be asked for something only once, while others with jobs similar to mine who didn't write stuff would have to be reminded again and again
now, there were some people who would ask for stuff without thinking it through, or really needing it. i would ask them to send me an email request, and asking them to put that little bit of work into making their request often ended it.

Reply to LPT: A good financial habit to get into is treating money as hours of work. Ask yourself how many hours of work something would take if you buy it. The awareness of the amount of time you put into purchases helps reduce compulsive spending. by humvee911
here's another LPT in the same vein...
delay your purchase.
you might see a thingy and think "wow, it ain't cheap but i just gotta buy that thingy!"
hold up. wait a few days and cool down. think about whether you really need it and whether you can really afford it, and, like this LPT says, how many hours of work it will cost.
i've avoided the purchase of many thingies by delaying a few days, and it's surprising how i soon forget about the thingy

are you just now thinking this through?
why do you think someone would hold a gun to your head if not to threaten to shoot you

used to be fairly common, or at least not uncommon but now it's taken care of with surgery.
i'm an old fart (68) but back when I was a kid there was mean spirited snark about "hare lips" (the cleft palate lip gap looks like a rabbit's) but i wasn't sure what it was about bcuz i didn't know of anyone who had one.

you can go far with xlookup, which gives some database functionality to a spreadsheet. the problem is you can go too far, trying to manipulate too much data from too many spreadsheets.... all those linked tabs etc
at that point you should learn Access and maybe SQL to handle the mass of data
