Reply to Should video game directors be talked about in the same sphere as movie directors? by OfficalNotMySalad
No.
For a couple reasons:
- Vastly different mediums.
- Lack of definition on what a "video game director" is... for film, the guilds have very precise definition and division of labor for what a director does (vs. producer or other responsibilities). There is no such thing in video games. You can just call yourself the director. For some games, the closest match ("vision of final product") is the head game designer (there is no director) for other games (those with more story) maybe there is something closer. Then you have cinematic scenes, which may have an actual director (but not responsible for the whole game)
In my near 30 year game making career, including some very big recognizable AAA+ titles, for some productions it was the "Executive Producer" who might closest map to "film director", in others it was the game designer, or in other cases is was a writer who filled that space.
It's rare that there is a single visionary (despite what game media and hype tells you) that is as responsible for a game the way a director is responsible for a film.

Reply to TIL the former members of Timbuk 3 have refused to license the song "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" for commercials, including a $900,000 offer from AT&T and offers from Ford, the U.S. Army, and Bausch & Lomb for their Ray-Ban sunglasses. by big_macaroons
Anybody who likes that song but does know any of their other stuff would do well to buy a couple of their albums.
Catchy music, outstanding wry lyrics, an all time underrated band.
I recommend:
- A Hundred Lovers
- Big Shot in the Dark
Or any others.
“If you are what you eat, then I’m dead meat”
So many great songs.
They (a married couple, band broke up when they divorced) also wrote some very romantic songs (“Easy”, “B side of Life”, “A Hundred Lovers”)

Reply to Laid off and lost my stock options (but they said I could keep them) - am I out of luck? by those_pesky_kids
if it's any consolation, startup stock options are rarely worth anything.
and to "keep them" you would have had to exercise them, which would mean coming up with the cash, something often hard to do as you are being laid off.
