Reply to Film taste is largely subjective by 85Millennial
whether you like a film or not is 100% subjective.
but filmmaking is just as much a CRAFT as it is an ART. Craftsmanship can be somewhat objective. and that's where critics and other filmmakers/artists might have a leg up.
i also think quality of storytelling can be somewhat objective but thats much grayer.
it's an interesting subject.

a movie that tries to be 'deep' but fails. a movie that is constantly trying to remind you how deep it is. artsy to a detrement.
i find most chris nolan movies pretentious. confusing, complicated, and shallow. inception, the prestige, and tenet.
The English Patient
Out of Africa
chef's table on netflix is over the top pretentious

Reply to Breaking Bad vs Sopranos by Radiant_Potential425
Sopranos is on a different level.
BB is much more plot and cliffhanger based, which doesn't hold up to multiple viewings near as well, but very exciting the first time you see it.

interesting. it's been a while since I saw it but I never made the connection between dead ringers and taxi driver.
both are contenders for biggest "hitting me like a freight train" movies.
after dead ringers I sat and stared at the blank screen for 30 minutes, in shock.

Reply to Is it better that movie trailers should abandon popular songs for original songs instead by trover2345325
usually pulls me out. i dont think it's inherently bad, it's just usually lazy, trite, and poorly done.
amazon original trailers are a special level of terrible

My cat likes catnip, but goes crazy for valerian root. It’s a little frightening sometimes.
