I’ll chime in with my two sense. I’m not going to lecture you. No one is perfect but violence is never the answer unless your protecting yourself or a love one from serious harm. I believe a lot depends on how injured the other person is. Did you break his nose? His jaw? Hopefully all you did is hurt his ego. If the police come knocking on your door. Just respectfully tell them that you do not know the law and need to speak to your attorney.
If this happens, obviously get an attorney and let them handle the issue. I can see this going in many different directions but most likely nothing will happen to you, but I can also surmise that you might have to pay for some damages to that car the ‘victim’ hit. Saying all this the ‘victim’ was a douche.

I have no issues with you moving the car to a safe location. Common sense thing to do.

The cop not wanting to write a police report because you moved your car is unfortunate. I guess he was going to give you a state form, which you fill out yourself and submit it to your insurance company.

Them not calling it a hit and run because you moved your car I think is harsh. Obviously, you called 911 and provided your info to the police unlike the other driver.

What you can do is go to municipal court and sign a ticket yourself against the other driver, but then you have to go to court, which may be a hassle.

Finally, if you are not happy with the way the cops handled your stressed filled incident, you can simply call the station and make a complaint.

Honestly you do not need a lawyer yet. It’s not the end of the world. It’s just going to take time. First step is to call the number on the back of the ticket and plea not guilty. Secondly go to court and see what they have. It will be your first court appearance so do not feel pressure to do anything stupid. Thirdly, after finding out what they have, simply plea not guilty and tell them you need a lawyer. Finally, good, bad, or indifferent you should consult a lawyer (who will definitely be more experienced than you) and listen to their advice. Good luck.

I agree with just about everyone. First off. Shit happens, no one is perfect. Secondly, schedule a court date. I know some municipal courts used to have day and night sessions. Try and schedule at your convenience. Finally, on your court date speak to the prosecutor and find out what they’re going to offer. They will probably down grade the ticket and you might have to pay a bigger fine. If you can not afford a bigger find, you can accept the points and pay a smaller fine. The court won’t tell you if your insurance rates will go up, it’s up to your insurance. Prior to going to court, call your insurance company up and ask them. They should tell you. Good luck, you’ll be fine.
