Highly recommend finding a tax expert to negotiate with the IRS. Enrolled agent is what you want. They're certified to work with the irs, and many used to work for them. Offer in compromise I believe is the process.
It can be done on your own but those guys know the system better.
Despite the common thought, the IRS can be reasonable.
If you're still a high earner, they'll want whatever they can get. But usually over a limited period, 5 years. They can waive the rest.
They're not cheap, but many years ago $5k of help got over $50k wiped clean (actually $50, not zero). Made this grown man weep years of joy when I got that letter.

Reply to Was Bruce Willis in Die Hard the ushering in of the modern everyman action star? by SquatOnAPitbull
No.
Charles Bronson did it in the 70s with Death Wish, and many others. Tough but regular guy.
80's came and Arnold and Stallone brought huge physiques and special training as the prototype action stars.
But we still had Beverly Hills Cop and other comedic action movies with regular guys.
Honestly, everyone makes too much of it and Bruce. It was funny and entertaining. A good heist movie.
Alan Rickman is the main reason it took off and kept flying.

Fair. But they allege they've never suffered a loss. So if that $200 never happens, then what?

You keep mentioning the subsidy paid by taxpayers.
According to the FHLB site, they've never incurred a net loss.
Their benefit is using the federal promise to pay, thus getting lesser lower rates.
But how are the taxpayers losing $6+billion per year on this? Can you elaborate on this?
