Yes if you’ve got the time, Olympic NP is well worth it.

Hard to believe but the road deck here is approx 200’ higher than the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Downtown GH (i.e., down by the water)? Cuz that’s the place to be.

Tacoma has some great museums, and the waterfront out by Old Town is really nice, but for just a quick evening stay, I would definitely pick Gig Harbor. If you get lucky with a clear sunset, the view of Mt Rainier is unbeatable.

Wow that’s quite a trip! If I may suggest, take one of your Portland days and add it to the Olympic NP. The park is huge, and you won’t even scratch the surface in one day (or two for that matter). As a fan of a nice road trip, I’m jealous… have a fun and safe trip!

Great shot. Hard to believe that Rainier’s summit is over 7,000’ higher than where you are.

For a nice day trip from Gig Harbor, I would highly recommend driving west on WA-302 to Belfair, then south on WA-106 along the Hood Canal, linking up with US-101 near Hoodsport. You can make a loop by heading north, crossing the Hood Canal Bridge and back down through Bremerton. Easy drive with fabulous scenery, especially if it’s a rare clear day. Plenty of cool spots to stop on the way (Alderbrook Lodge, state parks, restaurants, etc.).
