Unfortunately it's really hard to find a more consulting position with little code straight out of a PhD program. However, you may be able to find a really interesting research position in a team focused on inclusivity/consumer fairness research. You have a really interesting perspective given what you've gone through and it would be really good to use it as your strength. Who's better to work on this form of research than someone who lives it? Good luck on everything!!! And congrats on graduating, I know it must have been difficult given what you went through

The types of teams that are being affected seem to be teams overly invested in research with no direct path to product, Amazon just laid off a bunch from Amazon robotics, Amazon AMP, ethical AI in meta/twitter. 2023 will probably squeeze us further, so if you work in a team that has very expensive models that don't have a good ROI, those would be the first to go

It's actually super rare to deal with custom NN if you have direct customer products. Usually what you see come out of academia is not viable /scalable for any large customer base. You'd be surprised how many baselines power the systems we consider SOTA. Especially in the recommendation systems domain.
