Rogue human could kill AI, terminator warns
Ok not all just humor… yes it’s possible a rogue AI could spel doom, which is why perhaps we need to think bigger about how we create AI? Sadly it will almost certainly take at least one disaster or close call that involves mass death before we do. Humans tend to react much more than act.

Reply to comment by a_drive in TIL Winston Churchill opposed the American use of napalm during the Korean war but still allowed Americans to publish claims of British support for American napalm attacks. by jamescookenotthatone
Implication…. I’m sure you are right, but language matters. Anytime I have to make an assumption about what someone was trying to say or meaning to say, that’s writing primed to create misunderstanding. And I’m in a grumpy mood so I vented my pet peeve. In actual conversation we get a lot of other cues and can ask for clarification. In written words…. That is all absent.
My comment was certainly an overreaction, as judged by me on a day I’m feeling better. But today…. Well that title just hit me hard.

“Still allowed Americans…”. I don’t even know what to say about that characterization.
I don’t know, but perhaps he didn’t object publicly to Americans claiming support, …but that’s a far cry from such a grossly wrong and misleading statement that loudly proclaims Churchill somehow was the governing authority over America.

Reply to iPhone 14's Car Crash Detection Still Triggering False 911 Calls, Forcing Dispatchers to Reallocate Resources Away From Real Emergencies by No-Drawing-6975
My iPhone 12 was about to call for help one day…. Because my paired Garmin watch was on my wrist while I was hammering something. I almost didn’t catch it. I like the idea, but I need a harder to ignore alert that emergency services are about to be called. Something like the emergency alerts I get now and then that are pushed to me.

What do you mean, win for Biden? This is under his presidency but it’s a WIN for the US, and to a lesser but still notable extent, the world (long term). Will become a huge savings in $ too, as compared with the no longer needed fuel and oil cost savings over time.
A quick search returns this: “208,000 vehicles drive more than 1.1 billion miles each year, using 114.3 million gallons of fuel…”.
I left off the estimated fuel cost from that quote because it’s clearly wrong - gasoline doesn’t cost less than a dollar per gallon.
So yes the electricity cost will be nontrivial for 200k vehicles, but still a fraction of the cost of gas or diesel, per mile. And the cost of maintenance will also be a tiny fraction of petroleum powered vehicles, because electric cars need no oil changes, transmission service and fluids, radiator services, etc. they will need service still of course, but the machinery of electric powered cars is dramatically simplifier than internal combustion powered cars.
All this is an enormous win for US taxpayers, for the long term effects on global climate, and for building and optimizing the electric car industry.
YAY!

Reply to A single chip has managed to transfer the entire internet's traffic in a single second by redhatGizmo
False headline in an ebullient attempt to gain clicks.
No…. The chip can TRANSMIT those data speeds. It says nothing about data TRANSFER. Nothing about latency, transmission media delays, receiver hardware and how the data can be captured and stored.
All of these can be developed but haven’t been yet, I think.

I can smell it when folks are coming down with illness, or fighting off something. It’s not a pleasant smell - I just want to stop breathing until I’m clear of it. The smell shows up most when a cold or flu is going around in a group I’m part of (school or work). It’s pretty spot on, and the smell is there a day or three before symptoms start.
