My take as someone who’s lived in South West Yonkers for less than two years: it’s fine.
If you grew up anywhere in NYC, you’re used to homelessness and the occasional bad actors. If you decide to go without a car, you could get by as well if you stick to local groceries, retail stores, and restaurants. You won’t find too many big box/brand name chains, though.
Getty Square in particular has changed A LOT since I last worked in the area 15 years ago (I think for the better). Nearby Chicken Island is also getting a spurt of development over the next few years.
I’ve taken the Yonkers Metro North station several times and it’s safe. There’s even a police precinct in it.

Lastly, if you’re concerned about crime, check out the stats yourself: https://www.yonkersny.gov/live/public-safety/police-department/crime-map
I’d recommend looking at different time periods (ie 30/90 days and over the last two years.
Good luck!
