My takeaway from that article was that 8' 4x4's are particularly garbage (because they're always plywood veneer cores) but 10-footers are dramatically better, which is useful to know

If you have rebar twisters or end-cutting pliers, the shield is soft zinc and the head will pop off pretty easy, then you can pull the steel nail in the center and fish out the remaining bits of shield. I'm a big fan of two-part Sika cement in a caulking gun for quick and easy concrete repairs.

It should stay well-hidden unless the wood rots away entirely, but you could use 3/4" steel pipe and pipe caps if you wanted to keep everything inherently smooth
