I hate my kid's pencil sharpeners. We don't really go through so many pencils that we need an electric, but all of the pencil sharpeners I can find are these cheap ones with like, a razor blade in them. I find that the blades get dull too quickly, and they make the pencils crack, and I hate it.

What I want is something that has a system like the rotating blades from my school days, but I don't want to install a school pencil sharpener. I want something smaller that I can stick in a kitchen drawer, but still durable.

What should I buy?

Jetpens has you covered for pretty much any style of pencil sharpener. For a very basic manual one, I like the one that came with my set of Staedtler Lumigraph pencils. It does not catch the shavings, but it gives a good reliable point and they are easy to find at most art stores or online. They make a good mechanical pencil too if you get sick of sharpening, although my own all time fav mechanical is the Uni-Ball Kuri-Toga

I'm not sure why, but my kid's teacher won't allow mechanical pencils. I think it has something to do the the grip? I'm not sure. It seems like a dumb rule to me, but... rules are rules.

I’d try to find the older type, that can hang from a wall or sit on a desk. They are still the best. I have a couple of them and I love them. They are the Boston brand. You can also buy newer ones, but I’d check the ratings on those. They are so much better than small, hand held pencil sharpeners.

That’s why I’d recommend the desktop model. I think you may need to look for a vintage one for that, though.

Classroom Friendly Supplies has some nice and durable manual sharpeners. They have a tension clamp that you can mount to a desk. They come apart and have replacement parts.
