Look into amish furniture. Very good quality, you can pick your wood, finish, hardware etc. If you live near the amish it can be cheap, if you don't, there are outlets in most urban areas, but expect a markup.

They make everything from the country sort of styles that you'd expect to very modern and timeless designs. Quite good quality.

My wife and I have outfitted our entire house one room at a time that way. Some of it is 30 years old and looks and works like new.

$3500 is possible (without mattress), but only if you are going to amish country. And there are also tiers of amish furniture. That may not get you top shelf hardware etc.
