Just a question, when did people start calling sweatshirts sweaters? Like aren’t sweaters the knitted tops? I’m confused.

I'm not sure actually. For me, without a hoodie they are sweaters and with one they are hoodies.

The English call sweater and pullover shear shirts jumpers. Seems more of a regional thing because as a west coaster I would call that a sweatshirt as well. Then there’s fleece and then sweater. All based on the material I guess.

I work with a person in her 20s (east coast US) and she calls a hooded sweatshirt or any sweatshirt a sweater. I’m honestly thinking young people just call things whatever because they haven’t necessarily been taught.
