I second this. A rake and bag of fertilizer from Lowe’s/Home Depot will cost you almost nothing and your lawn will look the same.
Here's a tip for all you green lawn lovers, just plant some fucking clover and get over it. It re-balances the nitrogen in the lawn on its own while not growing super tall, especially if you get a microclover seed. No need to fertilize every year and looks far better in drought as well without needing to water ever.
Wife pitched this idea to me this week and I was like, you want me to plant… my sworn enemy?
Did a little reading and I’m all in. Fuck mowing every week, fuck fertilizer and watering. I get that it’s not for everyone and I do love a traditional grass yard but I’m willing to try it.
Wife has never been stung by a bee either, so I figure she can pop that cherry with a shitwhack of clover everywhere.
This! Clover was not considered a weed, and was known to be valuable in lawns/pastures. But the chemical companies couldn’t figure out how to make a weed killer that didn’t also kill clover, so they simply branded clover a weed. We need to get past this idea that a nice green grass lawn is a good thing. They are terrible for the environment. We have a lawn that requires no water, lime, fertilizer, or herbicides. In the spring it’s a beautiful mixture of cool season grass and flowers (violets, dandelion, etc). In early summer the clover takes off and by July when things heat up, the clover and warm season grasses start to take over. By mid fall, everything is dormant but the cool season grasses. The lawn is pretty much always green from April to December, is always nice to walk on, and only needs to be mowed once a week at most.
Find a small company, screw trugreen... Heres my trugreen story.
We had a small company for tick treatments of the yard, truegreen bought them out. First service they did was fine and the same as the prior service. But that didnt last long, soon they started showing up and doing services we never agreed to or asked for and billing us for them. I get it mistakes happen, they cleared the charges, said sorry wont happen again, then it did happen again and again. Cancelled them got another small company now for tick treatments, and now true green is like a psycho ex girlfriend always mailing us and calling us to come back. Best to be avoided.
Did you have Turfmasters too? I miss them...we went with trugreen...been sorta lazy, haven't dropped them yet.
Not sure where you are located but if near Bethany/Woodbridge/Cheshire, Woodbridge Estate Care does some amazing work.
Not sure where you are but I use Atlantic Lawn service and so do several of my neighbors. Dave is great to work with.
Teed and brown is great
The worst. We used them years ago and a few days after the bill would arrive, the phone calls would start from them asking when they would get their payment.
Over seed your lawn with clover to fertilize, don't keep it a grass monoculture, and plant lots of native wildflowers where it makes sense. Grass lawns are killing the ecosystems, and the lawn chemicals are creating worse pests every year.

Don't go near trugreen. Seriously. I've been in the industry for over 6+ years and can tell you trugreen is the worst direction you can go. They look great but it's horribly amateur, fraudulent, and downright dangerous. They do fun things like show up and don't even apply leaving you a bill, sell you products with fancy words that don't do much and if they do not well, as well as continue to apply products to your property after canceling FOR YEARS. They will bill you.
Look at local companies in your area and shop around. There's a couple great ones depending on your area. Way more professional and cost effective. Trugreen will send you a 19 year old kid with no license to lug a hose around spraying orange shit everywhere. Hell go home and his pants will stand up on their own. Not a joke. Be safe! Good luck!
