What platform is everyone using to file taxes? I've always owed, so I moved out of CT in August.

TurboTax says I owe CT $3642 FreetaxUSA says I owe CT $645

Wtf?

Can you compare the two, line by line? There must be a difference.

Freetaxusa offers a line by line summary where I can see the breakdown. TurboTax doesn't offer that unless I pay $59. Feels a little sketchy

Can you print out a “paper” return to PDF from that version of TT?

I found it! The total tax on TurboTax is 5535. The total on freetaxusa is 2767. Big discrepancy. I've always used TT and always owed a lot so I didn't expect to run into something like this

The underlying logic should be the same, so you must have entered something differently. Unless there's some state rule that one of them doesn't know about. Was your federal tax the same on the two sites?

Yes federal tax is the same, and tax owed to my new state is the same. But TT thinks CT tax is twice (exactly) what FT thinks. The TT estimate would be 10% of my CT income

So you're doing a part year resident? Maybe TT isn't giving you credit for taxes paid to your new state.

Maybe. Thank you for helping me think through what's going on here! I certainly won't be filing either until I figure what's going on here

No problem. I lurk on r/Tax, and they have similar questions all the time (usually people mistype something on one of them). They also tend to recommend freetaxesusa.

Glad you found it. Good luck, taxes with moves are hard.

CT has direct filing online through their site. I always did the calcs through one of the online programs (I use TaxHawk as Federal was always free) and then enter on CT site directly.

I've never even heard of that! Thank you

Did you try directly with the state? I used their online system this year and it was just as easy as turbo tax. I answered questions and plugged in some numbers and it did all the work. I printed and checked it.

I would suggest doing that. It is called my connect. Then print all 3 side by side and see what is different.

Also where did you move? And did you work in CT after moved? And are you using part year forms

Can you print the two tax forms and play “spot the difference”?

If you play that game, you could win $3000!

Did you finish all the steps. Sometimes numbers get put up but then you click through and it recalculates and displays the correct amount.

I used TurboTax all the way up until it wanted me to pay for the service, which i didn't want to with the numbers being so different. Thanks to u/glacialerratical I found a line by line review on each platform and it turned out this was a TurboTax issue and not a CT wants too much from me issue (for once)

This doesn't apply if you're using TT online and this might not matter much because I haven't seen it myself but if you're using TT software, wait until April to send in. TT is always updating their software and there is no telling if they are updating to fix programming calculations.

We typically get a refund from the feds and have to pay CT but this year is unusual for us, we're getting a sizeable refund from CT along with a fed refund. Not sure why this year is different but I will wait until April to let things level off with TT software before sending in.

Bro had to bring trump into a topic where trump was never mentioned or even slightly relevant. No one cares about your fetishized thoughts of trump. You act like Trump is the only person in business or politics who has used loopholes in taxes to minimize loss. If you really think Trump is such a massive threat to your life right now I don't know what to tell you.
