Seeing this out of context it seems quite innocent, especially this time of year as many people are a bit more charitable. Don't let some paranoid people reading too much into a comment stop you from helping others!

I remember seeing your comment, maybe before it was downvoted, and knew exactly what you were about to offer. Didn't read it as creepy at all.

You should look up local children shelters and see if they’ll take them!

OP t1_j0up1cg wrote

Thanks, I didn’t think of a children’s shelter. I tried calling a few women’s shelters but they had the phone disconnected? Idk I couldn’t get thru,

There is a coat drop-off & pick up exchange as part as a food pantry that is run by a friend of mine in New haven. They are always looking for extra coats to be put in the public shed for anyone to take from especially children sizes.

Forget the name off the top of my head, but I can find out for you if you like.

Sorry if already mentioned but your town probably has a " buy nothing" group on Facebook. Great way to get and give tons of things including clothes!

t1_j0x0e49 wrote

Those buy nothing groups usually resell online.

While that definitely happens in some situations I really disagree with the idea that it’s the norm. I was in a large buy nothing group in Brooklyn and many things were just small immediate use items and baby gear. there were expensive items given away in some cases, but the people receiving them almost always ended up giving away something size-able in the coming months to give back with something they no longer needed but meant the world to someone. There were instances where people were caught reselling but they were banned when it was realized. There were way more instances of people posting a month later about how much an item meant to them and how they were using it, with pictures in their home.

In my buy nothing group since I’ve moved to ct certain home and baby goods are snatched up quickly and sad when missed, but Ive seen about 2k worth of audio equipment(pa, monitor etc) go more than a day before someone with actual use for it snagged it up (not me) when it could have easily been flipped in a day for at least a few hundred bucks and a short drive.

Excuse the rant, I just saw this after playing my synthesizer for a bit and wanted to give people a different view on it. I got the synth from my buy nothing group in bk when I started messing around with piano. It’s an awesome old Roland workstation that I would never have been willing to spend the money on a new hobby. Almost a grand in music gear from a stranger when I lived in Brooklyn and didn’t have money to spend. I play it every day and I make sure to spread some smiles in my new buy nothing group when I have something I don’t need and someone who wants it. The bad cases don’t have to spoil the chance to spread joy in your own community.

Thanks for the post. I completely agree, I've never resold anything and it's been so helpful for my family

Key word is usually. Not always .

Usually implies more often than not. That’s the part I disagree with. I admit immediately it happens sometimes, but the idea that it happens more often than not is baseless imo.

You're a good person.

If you can't find a charitable place to give the clothes away to, check & see if your town has a "buy nothing, sell nothing" Facebook page. We were able to pass on a ton of our kid's clothes & toys as they outgrew them.

That’s a really nice offer and in the spirit of this season

Be careful dumpster diving. People have died that way when the garbage truck has arrived when they are inside. The trucks are really quick and once they stab the lift arms into the sockets you can’t get out the side doors and you end up inside the truck in the compactor. You should bring a spotter with you.

OP t1_j0upd12 wrote

Oh absolutely, I don’t dumpster dive (no hate to anyone that does) we have a friend who swears by it.

So, not only does the size of the girl matter to you, but also their temperament? OP, you should be ashamed.

Just put them in the same dumpster. Someone will find them. (Kidding) You can also put them on Facebook marketplace for free. Someone will come pick them up quickly, I'm sure.

You're a nice person....to offer but also to take the time to clear up your comment that probably only a few people misinterpreted anyway. Hope you find somewhere to donate :)

Redditors sometimes can be a fickle bunch. Don't let some downvotes from the snarky folks discourage you for doing a good thing and being generous and kind. Here, have some upvotes to make up for it.

Contact your town hall, a lot of times there is a social service person who can coordinate with families in need.

That’s pretty damn sad that people downvoted you for that. In no way did your comment seem creepy.

Depending on your area, thrift shops would love donations like that! Little local tends to be better than Goodwill or Savers IMHO.

t1_j0wlaso wrote

My daughter could definetly use them! She's in 9-12 months right now.

Look for your local goodwill store. They usually have drop off hours and a place to pull up. They give receipts! There’s one in Westport on Post Rd and in Fairfield on Kings Highway, not sure about elsewhere.

Dumpster diving is illegal in CT. It has been for almost 25 years.

That law can’t stop me as I can’t read!!

OP t1_j0vmkhu wrote

I doubt anyone would ever get in trouble for it. It was mostly enacted for documents getting thrown out.

Something to do with tax documents if I'm right.

Only way I think anyone could ever get in trouble is if some Robocop decides to be a real dickhead .. or if a mess is made.

Good to be aware of - one can get into trouble for dumpster diving, so anyone doing it - be careful, be considerate, don't get caught. 😉

If we’re paying CTs finest, I really don’t want them targeting dumpster divers.

We know it’s illegal, and we don’t all live on the shoreline.

Yeah, I know. Didn’t mean to imply that. Being from Connecticut. I hate telling people because they always assume. I’m like “no, no, from the poor part”.
