Call a shop like Newington Gun Exchange and ask about their consignment policy and how to handle them (without permits).

You can likely transport them to a gun store (locked case in the trunk) , or if they’re close they might come pick them up. Assuming they’re worth it.

If they’re in good condition you can probably get them appraised and sell them to a store.

You can still sell inherited guns. Handguns are a slight bit trickier due to permitting & possession, but most gun stores will have an appraisal and transport procedure for inherited guns - long and short.

Country Handloader and Arms in Northwest CT could help you with that.

Do you know what type of rifles they are? Hunting rifle is way too broad.. and who knows might find someone who would want to buy them off you and transfer them over.

Do not give them to the police. They will just take them home with them. Sell them. No it’s not a big deal and not illegal. What sort of guns BTW? Make and caliber? Maybe folks on here could give you suggestions on their value so you don’t get ripped off.

If you have pics I may be interested in buying them. I wouldn’t be interested in reselling them so I’d give you a better price than any shop

Don't ever do this. Ever. Many local cops will do what your locals did. If you get one with a stick up their asses though you're in for a really really bad time.

If your friend is not comfortable touching them, then I assume they would be uncomfortable putting them in the car to take somewhere. As they should be! If you can't verify a gun is unloaded, ALWAYS assume it is. If your friend calls the local police and just explains the situation, and that it is unknown if the guns are loaded or not, a patrol officer will come by to secure the guns for your friend. What to eventually do with them is a separate question. Nobody should feel unsafe in their own home.

Do not call the police for firearms that you have that are not in your lawful possession EVER! Op’s friend needs to contact their executor and find out if there was any documentation naming inheritance for the firearms. Either way the executor or an attorney can advise her on what to do with them. I get that some people in this sub don’t like guns but having LE take possession of them without proper instruction could potentially land the possessor in hot water or cause them to miss out on a sale (should they go that route)that could net them thousands if it was a historical piece. There’s nothing worse than finding out you relinquished a piece for a $50 visa gift card that was worth $25,000 because you didn’t know any better. Or worse you get some nonsense possession charge because you are technically considered a prohibited person. Crazier things have happened.

Gun buybacks are a ripoff. Never “sell” them to the state. In this gun market, you can get a couple hundred dollars for a hunting rifle through a vendor easily.

CT gun laws are wonky, best bet is call your local gun shop. They can't be transferred to new owner unless they have a permit, even if they are willed to you if I am correct. Either way I think you need to work with a Federal Firearms License carrier to make the exchange (which the gunshop will have that license). If you just want to get rid of them, ask your local PD.
