Mine was $515…electric heat pump heat, 40 year old windows, 1800 sq feet, right off Long Island sound. Looking into Constellation tomorrow. It hasn’t even been that cold yet, February and March could be expensive!

Mine was just over $300, with the Constellation supplier rate. My bill would have been $100 higher with Eversource as the supplier... This is the highest electricity bill I've ever had. Some of my usage was offset by my solar panels, but I usually run out of banked solar power in late November, so I start getting bills higher than the connection fee in December through February. I can't imagine not having solar with these rates, it's fucking insane.

My first bill? $117. 1400 sq.ft. Cape style house. Work 12 hours/day, M-F, with barely any electrical use.

Meanwhile I’m still trying to figure out how my bill went from the usual $250 to $789!!! For a 2 bedroom apt! That’s almost half the rent! Wtf 🤬

Electric heat?

Yes but usually during the summer it’ll be around $150 to $175 and in the winter $230 to $275 but NEVER has it been this expensive.

Our electric heating(with other electric appliances/water heater) during January(with one room of 2 baseboards on at low temp, but usually running a lot) is about $620ish. January is usually the worst month, but this January is a bit mild. Hoping it reflects in the bill to be near the usual amout, otherwise we'd be probably beating you. December is usually around $350-400ish(before these rate increases). We should be getting our January bill soon, a bit scared lol.

That's pretty high for a 2 bedroom apartment though(the $789), something might be up with your usage or a leak developed somewhere, or your habits changed. It's awful how out of control these rates have gotten, especially for those of us with electric heating. A lot of people with electric heating are going to struggle a bit while this is going on.

How many solar panels do you have?

Why not look for the cheapest supplier, which constellation is not? People seriously have to stop blindly talking them. Their moment has passed.

Personally I would do Thinkenergy. 14.80 cents vs 14.81 cent but 100 RECs so cleaner energy for less than one dollar year for most people.

Windows aren’t usually the culprit, it’s typically air sealing that needs to be done. You can get $1000 worth of air sealing for $50 through a state program.

I can’t really tell, but it sounds like he is bragging about living alone and working all the time so his electric bill is lower.

Stop leaving your lights on

One person, same SF, oil heat / hot water and my new bill is $90ish (240ish kwh). Up from $65ish last month with similar usage. Sucks, but my bill hasn't tripled.

Having an extra person shouldn't, in itself, triple your usage compared to mine. Do you have large draws like: gaming computers, a hot tub, electric heaters, etc? If not, I'd spend some time to figure out where your draws are before spending thousands of dollars on solar.

Switching is good but know that it isn’t instant. It can take two full billing cycles to change suppliers.

Lightbulbs are not doubling an electric bill. It’s most likely heat and large appliances coupled with unregulated utilities. Dealing with these in an apartment is especially difficult when you can’t change out a dishwasher or lower the temp of a water heater.

My bill just came out to 240.50(generation only). This is with constellation, without it would be 400 just for generation.

The first knee jerk response to go solar and begin taking on a huge responsibility and lock yourself into more payments. Which is typical.

But why not figure out why you used so much electricity? You say energy friendly but that bill doesn’t represent it. Even at half the rate that’s a ton of energy. (Look at the comment with the dude has solar + paying 300)

My bill was $189 (record high) for 1600 square feet using oil. Mostly because I’ve been supplementing using space heaters.

Maybe an energy audit, or look at your month over month usage and see where the spike is. I’ve gone through all my equipment and calculated how much electricity I use and why.

My hot tub for example, I estimate is about $30 a month by itself and the heaters are $40 ($1-1.50 per day) the math worked out close because last year this time my bill was $120

Having control and knowledge over your usage helps stability in your bill. That’s energy friendly ;)

The rush to get solar and keep carelessly burning up energy blows my mind here. Don’t forget to switch your supplier and save 10 cents per kw.

Lastly: oil heat burns a lot of electricity as well with hot water. The blower motor constantly runs, I replaced mine with new energy efficient one.

Ours way more than doubled but then I realized it’s for two months going forward! Not past due. I called and they couldn’t explain…wtf…

ConEdison in Danbury. I used them when they were Ross Solar in 2015/16 something like that. Same place & people just a different name. They’re honest, upfront and stand behind their work. I highly recommend them to anyone considering solar.

Mine went from $160 (which was already kind stupidly high for 2 people, 1 that leaves every single weekend) and we were both gone for Christmas break. To over $340 that’s more than double after it doubled previously

I live alone in a 600sqft one bedroom and my electric bill is about $50 a month now that rates habe gone up again. I do have a small full size fridge and don't use the oven often. It is still expensive for 1 small light, a Tv for four hours a day, a phone, a tablet and a microwave.

IANAL, but I'm like 99% sure that's untrue. Electricity companies are not like ISPs.

Contracts in CT are worthless. One of the few good laws this state has makes it illegal for a company to impose termination fees/penalties for ending a contract early. Accordingly, a contract that locks in a rate can literally only help the consumer in this state. Rate goes down? End your contract. Rate goes up? You're contract protects you.

Thankfully we switched to Constellations back in October or so. Total bill was $169. Up from $140 last month. Saved us about $75 if we stuck with eversource. Electric hot water heater. Oil heat.

For solar installer I would check out Earthlight out of Ellington

3000 sq. ft house with a 40 panel solar system installed 2015. $12.84 electric bill this month which is the same as every month. Solar lease payment of $100 a month. Bill is same Even in summer with central AC and swimming pool. We have gas heat and last winter had bills up to $600 a month. Installed smart thermostats and never set heat above 61 degrees when home. During day when at work/school heat set at 52 degrees. We wear hoodies! $200 gas bill this month. Just replaced 25 year old boiler last week with more efficient unit courtesy of my American Home Shield policy.

Please! Just go with an alternative energy supplier such as constellation etc. You can get a fixed rate plan for 2 or 3 years. If you want to do solar more power to you but you DO NOT need to pay Eversource or UI for electricity generation (though you do need to pay them for “delivery fees”).

Two year old, 2-bedroom log cabin, 1200 square feet with one heat pump, thermostat set at 58˚ = $383. Typically $175 for January. Fuck Eversource.
