I'm an hour and a half away too, in Paradise.
Go at sunrise, if possible. The light is incredible and the dunes' colors really pop before the sunlight hits them and washes away the color. Under a full moon is pretty cool too.

Chico here. Is it possible to camp or would it be an early more long departure to catch the sunrise, either way, I'm game, but would rather camp and catch both. Butte county has it's issues but the sunrises and sunsets are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen.

I camped at Butte Lake Campground. If you go in the off-season (I went in November), no reservations are required and there are plenty of spaces. It's right next to the trailhead to Cinder Cone (Where I took the shot).

You can get to it by visiting the campground here
Then hike to Cinder Cone from the trailhead there.

Was thinking of hitting lassen or Dunsmuir on Monday since off work.
Fouve OP t1_j8zxv3n wrote
Both are great! You can see a lot of Mossbrae and Lassen on my website too. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

How is it getting to moss. I chickened out when I found out that the train tracks were active. I have some mobility issues so got spooked. Have you been to Potum love spending day there
Fouve OP t1_j8zys16 wrote
Mossbrae isn’t bad. You can walk alongside the tracks for most of the trail, but you really do have to constantly listen for trains. There hasn’t been a time where I haven’t run across one.
Potential is a cool swimming hole and falls. I’d recommend checking it out. There’s a waterfall loop in the area where you can see over a dozen waterfalls in a single weekend. You can check it out via a simple Google search…I’ll have to do a blog post on it one day.
