Mossbrae isn’t bad. You can walk alongside the tracks for most of the trail, but you really do have to constantly listen for trains. There hasn’t been a time where I haven’t run across one.
Potential is a cool swimming hole and falls. I’d recommend checking it out. There’s a waterfall loop in the area where you can see over a dozen waterfalls in a single weekend. You can check it out via a simple Google search…I’ll have to do a blog post on it one day.
I camped at Butte Lake Campground. If you go in the off-season (I went in November), no reservations are required and there are plenty of spaces. It's right next to the trailhead to Cinder Cone (Where I took the shot).
Go at sunrise, if possible. The light is incredible and the dunes' colors really pop before the sunlight hits them and washes away the color. Under a full moon is pretty cool too.
