Thanks! for now I'm watching a few news channels and adding them depending on my own critera, but I'm going to add an option for people to nominate their own events. I'm also going to add a seperate section for wars and conflicts, in case you're wondering why there's no Ukraine news.

Cool, thanks. I often build for desktop size first, then optimize for mobile, so I get it.

I avoid the depressing world news most of the time so it looks really handy to catch up.

Yeah, sorry about that - I'm working on a seperate section for conflicts and wars, particulary domestic ones. The Iranian protests will be in there instead.

At the moment I'm using various news agencies like Reuters, AP etc and also collating info from Wikipedia. I hope to add more sources soon.

No idea if this could ever do this, but I have aways thought it would be fascinating to graph global conflict over the course of human history using some metric. I'd be fascinated to know if humanity is more or less violent today than it was in, say, the 1500s AD or 1500 BC by any metric. Maybe lives lost per capita attributed to war? Or people per capita involved in a national conflict?

Seems like you wouldn't catch up to important events. E.g. if you look right now you wouldn't even know Ukraine is invaded by Russia and UK is paralyzed by strike actions

What sources are you using? Add more sources, please, the map seems a little bare of events. It would be cool if there was at least one something for the most countries.

Why some areas are red?

Currently selected date shows articles from different dates. For example I am selected 26 January, but I see a Turkey article from 22 January.

Every article links to the homepage of Wikipedia. It would be cool to parse actual news sites.

Sources are just based on a few News agencies and Wikipedia articles I've picked out. Will update it with proper feeds soon.

Red areas are disputed territory. I'll be adding a section for those soon too.

Cool idea, for example today begins second round of presidential vote iN Czechia, you could start adding similar stuff too, since it’s political. Also how long do you want to keep stories visible? Nepal plane crash was almost 2 weeks ago and the icon is still red. Maybe it should start fading out after a week or so.

It's a really cool idea, it may just need filters or something so you can put more activity without saturating the map. It may also be worth thinking about the scale of a conflict or event scaling the icon. So, for example the Russia Ukraine issue is very popular, has been ongoing for awhile now and affects quite a lot around the world... So that would be bigger (just a thought). The final thing is how to manage when multiple countries are involved.

The company I used to work for had this functionality (Everbridge). It used to pull information from NC4, Nixle, NWS and a whole bunch of other sources... You could then send the information from the events to assets who could be affected by the events. They called it Visual Command Center

Would you ever think of integrating a "submit your own" type of thing? I research international news for fun (yeah, I know, I find fun in strange things) and would be totally up for submitting (equally important) pieces I've found from smaller news outlets.

Of course you'll never find a truly unbiased news source, however having one story covered by competing outlets is ground for making an informed decision of the actual facts/account of what's happened.

My only worry is that with that button, you could get bots submitting articles, I don't know enough about anti-bot tech, so wouldn't have the first clue about combatting it.

Alas the world surely needs something like this site.

I thought Twitter would effectively be like this wonderful, spacious, open-source-esque platform.. sadly I was wrong!

About the sources. Some of those listed are not political. It just seems like it's taking random death counters and info and putting it all down. Ok, a building collapsed due to water leaking? A stadium had a stampede? A lot of this is just random news stories about people dying. What's the algorithm to decide if an action is political or not? Just curious.

I find it unexpected and annoying that clicking on an item zooms the map to that location. Perhaps it would be a useful feature if there were hundreds of events, but now it just means I have to zoom out to look at the next. Got old after like 2 clicks, otherwise would have looked at them all.

Cool idea otherwise!

Do you have a plan to address under reporting foreign news? A lot of details and nuanced reporting done locally never makes it to mainstream Western media.

Perhaps you could somehow integrate at least the English-speaking local news sites into this?

Either way, looks great. lots of potential here

I love the concept, but I do not like the way that you hijacked the backspace key to jump back to previous incidents that I looked at (desktop user here). Maybe add a "Previous" button for that? Maybe also add a key to the meaning of the icons you use.

I love this idea but I fear burn out. This is a lot of admin work. Perhaps you can write a script that automates atleast the gathering of data.

Additionally, another very good news source is 'the daily aus' insta page. It is focused mostly on australian news but it also go into detail around global topics. The journalism is very good.

I love this. I recently took it upon myself to memorize the countries of the world, so I could name them off a blank map, and I had just mentioned to my wife that I would love a global map that links to current news.

This is awesome. The events' description have the perfect length, not too short, but also not too long. A time filter (within the last 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days) would be a great feature as soon as more and more events get added.

Hey OP, this is cool. I've been wanting to do something similar for awhile for a completely unrelated topic: listing locations of interest, where eventually users can submit their own to share.

Do you mind sharing what tech stack you used and some other technical details? I'm new to web development having recently completed a course, but still feel lost in the ocean.
What Mapbox API(?) or "thing" did you use? Is it tilequery?

It looks like you use Next.js? I'm only familiar with react but that was a framework I was looking at learning next, or vue.
I imagine I could create a form where users submit an entry like a basic to do list or json and then have it pull the data from there, rather than what looks like a lot harder work you've done where it has to scrape articles from various websites?
