The hand scanner? That the cashier has?

It’s a wireless scanner usually used to scan heavy items.

I've never seen one on individual self checkout lanes, but the cashier has one for that

My store, Meijer, has a scan-n-go option on their app. I use my phone to scan items in the aisles, put them straight into my bags, and when I check out, my phone links to the register with a qr code to bring up my items and let me pay. Generally, the cashier has to come over to scan 5-7 random items to make sure I'm honest, then I tap my card and I'm on my way. I don't have to unload and reload my carriage at check-out. I drive farther to get to this store and it's the only reason I shop there instead of the newer, bigger, better Kroger closer to my home.

Some of the places I go to have a handy chart of things like bananas and such so you can put them on the scale and then scan the UPC with the hand scanner for weighing.

Wow, utilize the stuff provided for me to use at the self checkout??? That's world-changing!

I got yelled at the first time I tried it this way! I emailed the manager and asked if it was going to be an issue using the wireless scanner and they said have at it.

Honestly, it was a game changer for me. I have Raynaud’s syndrome and my fingers are very sensitive. It’s so much easier and faster to just scan in the carriage but it’s not commonly used.

But if you like the people who work at that grocery store and want them to have a job after Christmas, just be pleasant and wait your turn, complement them on how they pack your things better than you can and support your local neighborhood community.
