If they are highballing, then lowball them and see if you can meet in the middle. Usually, I just pass on listings like that. The sellers often don't realize what used prices are.

The market for EVERYTHING is just bananas now. I remember being a kid (BACK IN MY DAY, shouts the old man), and just assuming everything you took possession of lost half its value the moment it became yours. I’ve been guitar window shopping, and people/shops are asking 2600 bucks for guitars that sold for 2800 new.

Vinnies and Salvos go one better, they will take a men's t-shirt that sells for $4.99 at Kmart, Big W or Lowes etc, and sell it for $10 second hand. In that case the remedy is to show the store manager the new item and the price that the item sells for new.

Since I found out they were doing this I stopped shopping at those shops. I think that's a terrible pratice.

It depends on the store, some of them are operated directly by the churches as a charity, and some operate somewhat independently as a profit making business, using the church "branding" for profit. Which, is something that one might argue the church never should have allowed to happen.

Something is only worth as much as someone is going to pay for it. This may or may not work in favour of the seller…. That’s their gamble.
