You’d better have a good paying job lined up or rich parents. Apartments are on par with Boston but salaries are not.

Aside from cost, it’s a great city. It has its issues (homelessness, NIMBYism, etc), but overall it has a lot to offer and the people I know living there now enjoy it.

I wouldn’t. There’s better opportunities elsewhere.

It’s a nice city.

It does also have housing prices like a major city without any of the amenities a major city has.

A good place to live but a bit expensive at this point, it really depends what you are looking for. I much prefer being here over a bigger city like Boston, it basically feels like a big town with more to do, but I know some people prefer the bigger city feel.

Depends on where in Portland. Anywhere that's not referred to as the downtown area (because believe me...as someone who used to live there, crazy shit goes on there) is your best bet, if you can find an affordable house.

What kind of crazy shit? It’s one of the most mild cities in the country lol I’ve been living here for 5 years

In the country, yes, shit's mild here if you make nationwide comparisons. Stack it up with other Maine cities and other areas in said cities, though...not so much.

More shootings than you can count on your hands and feet in the span of a few months, sketchy people, quite a fair bit of crime in general...the only available house in the entire state could be located there and I'd still take living in a tent in the backwoods of an entirely different Maine area instead.

The only good thing about it is that it's got a lot of nice stores and restaurants. You just have to keep your wits about you...and never, ever go out at night without protection.

You’re misguided, it’s extremely safe. The only people that get shot are the ones that are doing shady shit. I’ve spent so many nights out on the streets walking home and don’t see a damn thing. Read the news, shootings in Lewiston, abductions in Bangor, it’s happening everywhere. It’s a population thing. Having caution is smart but you’re over exaggerating quite a bit.

Not misguided, I just know my way around law and (generally) around criminals enough to play it safe instead of playing Fuck Around and Find Out with my life.

"The only people that get shot are those who do shady shit" isn't really true. Innocent people get shot all the time and they're just sitting there, at home, maybe watching TV or eating dinner. I could be walking home just listening to music when boom, bullet comes through me by some creepazoid rando. That's why it's good to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
