I’m obsessed with music and so is my spouse and I love cliché classic cheesy romance stuff so I’m making them a mixtape, on a cassette and everything!

The thing is we have very different music tastes xb. I love early 2000s and modern while they love 80s music. The only artist we agree on is Cupcake xb.

Ive googled a few 80s love songs but they’re all kinda slow and sad and I want even just a bit more upbeat so I’d love some recommendations!! They’ve given the request of Head Over Heels which is more of the vibe I’m going for lmao

Thanks in advance!!

Advice from a Gen-Xer....When making a mixtape for someone, its about putting songs on that YOU like, but that act as a love note to the person. If you're trying to come up with songs that they like but you don't, it just will not translate well

For her 30th birthday, my wife asked for a mixtape from me. I put songs I thought she would like. It had Sam Smith, Nick Jonas, Norah Jones, Garth Brooks...I can't remember what else. She hated it. She asked me to remake her one with songs that I liked but that reminded me of her, or made me think of her. Mine had The Vandals, The Ataris, Cake, bands like that...She loved it and we still listen to it on road trips.

If you're still dead-set on going with songs you are unfamiliar with, I'd suggest "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits, and either "Just What I Needed" of "You Might Think" by The Cars. Also, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

Good luck dude

Great advise tysm!!! I am listening to every song to make sure I like it to and especially paying attention to the lyrics because that’s my favourite part and I very much want them to relate.

I’m easily adaptable to new music, I love music so much in most forms so I’m not to worried about making it feel like a love letter. I’ve also definitely put a few in there that are very special to me and how I feel about them. I love the way you described <3 This does also make me more confident in my choices so thank you so much and thank you for the recommendations!! <33

I agree with the above comment that the best mixtapes are a way for you to express how you feel about the other person through songs you know well. You won't have the immediate emotional connection to these songs that makes the mixtape special to the person receiving them.

That being said, I love the 80s so I'll try to help out.

Your Love by the Outfield is a great song, but the vibe might not be right if they listen too closely to the lyrics.

Ah! Leah! By Donnie Iris

I Want to know What Love Is - Foreigner

Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon

Upbeat 80's love songs?

"When I Think Of You" by Janet Jackson

"Just Like Heaven" by The Cure

"True" by Spandau Ballet

"Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry

. . .

As was mentioned in other comments, it's not what you think they would want to hear, so much as that the songs you like, that make you think of them. That will make more of an impact.

Good luck, and please let us know how they receive the mixtape.

There is some great advice here. So I thought I would tell a story about the mix tape I made my now wife back in 1993. We had gotten together before she had to return to France to finalise her living arrangements etc. So apart from lots of overseas calls I made a mix tape for her with my take on Leftfield love songs which included The Ship Song by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Throw Your Arms Around Me by Hunters and Collectors

Not your traditional love songs but she loved it and it represented how I was feeling at the time.

Awwww thats so sweet! I did finish picking songs and I’m so happy with them I keep listening to the play list over and over xb I’m super excited to get the tape to her, she’s in the US rn while I’m in Canada Now it’s just time to learn how to get music on the cassette for me which I’ve been watching a lot of videos about!
