WTF are you even talking about at this point? Man, when your high wears off I hope you just delete this nonsense.

First of all, you HAVE to compare bands against their time period. And when you do, The Beatles absolutely come out on top, even 20 years after their last record. Take a look at this. It's a Wikipedia page, but it links to a book COMPILED BY CRITICS. In 1978, The Beatles held 4 of the top 10 spots on "Top 200 Albums" By 1987, they still had 3 of those spots.

The only other person/band I'd like to see in this conversation is Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys. He was putting together harmonies and instrumentation rivaling what The Beatles were doing, at the same time. What held him back was his asshat of a cousin, and his over-controlling father.

Ok, so your musical taste is obviously for more subdued singer-songwriter stuff and The Beatles aren't your jam. But they had released 6 or 7 albums, including Rubber Soul in 1965, by the time Cohen, Nick Drake and Velvet Underground released their first albums in 1967, with Van Zandt releasing his first album a year after that in '68. (I'm ignoring Coltrane, Davis and Simone because they don't belong in a pop/rock conversation)

To Say that your favorite artists, or the producers that they worked with, were not in anyway influenced by what The Beatles were doing is intentionally putting your head in the sand.

Look, I haven't listened to The Beatles with any regularity since I moved out of my parents' house over 20 years ago, but I also am not going to deny their influence on most of the music we listen to today

For you to offer the opinion that The Beatles are overrated, I'd like to know your opinion on bands that, at the time, were making better, more interesting music at the pace at which they were making it. My personal opinion is that no one other than Brian Wilson rivals The Beatles in that category and even that is pretty subjective

Advice from a Gen-Xer....When making a mixtape for someone, its about putting songs on that YOU like, but that act as a love note to the person. If you're trying to come up with songs that they like but you don't, it just will not translate well

For her 30th birthday, my wife asked for a mixtape from me. I put songs I thought she would like. It had Sam Smith, Nick Jonas, Norah Jones, Garth Brooks...I can't remember what else. She hated it. She asked me to remake her one with songs that I liked but that reminded me of her, or made me think of her. Mine had The Vandals, The Ataris, Cake, bands like that...She loved it and we still listen to it on road trips.

If you're still dead-set on going with songs you are unfamiliar with, I'd suggest "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits, and either "Just What I Needed" of "You Might Think" by The Cars. Also, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

Good luck dude

Like I said, we don't have anything to talk about. I know I'm not going to change your mine, so I won't try to. I can tell you I did not own a single one of the albums or singles on this list, but I am not going to deny the catchiness of No Scrubs, Kiss Me, Livin la Vida Loca, Every Morning or Believe. Straight up hooks. You may not LIKE the music or songs, but to unequivocally say they're trash is just wrong.

Alright, I took the test. I went to 1999, the year I graduated high school and, arguably one of the greatest years for movies. My opinion of "pop" at the time was non-existent as all I listened to was punk and ska from Fat Wreck Chords and RATM. Looking at the Top 10,

1 "Believe" Cher

2 "No Scrubs" TLC

3 "Angel of Mine" Monica

4 "Heartbreak Hotel" Whitney Houston featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price

5 "...Baby One More Time" Britney Spears

6 "Kiss Me" Sixpence None the Richer

7 "Genie in a Bottle" Christina Aguilera

8 "Every Morning" Sugar Ray

9 "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" Deborah Cox

10 "Livin' la Vida Loca" Ricky Martin

So, this is only one year, but I have to disagree with your theory that 90% of this is shit, and that's coming from someone who STILL mainly only listens to The Ataris, The Vandals and Spring Heeled Jack USA.

To say "pop music has always been shitty" is a pretty ignorant statement to make, considering the ever-changing definition of "POP" (meaning popular). Bands like The Beatles, The Cars, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears jump immediately to mind. Bands like Blink 182, Metallica, Garbage, Radiohead, and even REM would be considered Pop. Shit, Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z...Pop

I'm just scratching the surface here, but "pop" isn't just boy bands and Taylor Swift, LFO and LEN, it's artists who are popular in the mainstream.
