I thought this would be an interesting 2 for 1
. Give one ( or a few ) good covers and then one you either dislike or hate and why if you can.
GOOD COVERS
" Oh Darling " - Florence + the Machine ^(( originally by The Beatles) I love how much inflection and power she fills it with. Soulful flourishes. Beautiful highs and lows, peaks and valleys with shining moments.)
" Silver Springs " - Florence + the Machine ^(( originally by Fleetwood Mac) )
" Plain Gold Ring " - KIMBRA ^(( originally by Nina Simone) Kimbra really understands how to use her voice like an instrument and emphasize on tone and texture and layering especially live to create something beautiful.)
" Across the Universe " - Utada Hikaru ^(( originally by The Beatles )) Utada has just such a warm, cozy voice. Proof of the power of simplicity. It's feels like sunshine on your face.
BAD COVERS
" Put Your Records On " - Ritt Momney ^(( originally by Corinne Bailey Rae) ) ^(This cover literally gives me tinnitus. Too much filter and reverb, just lazy. I have zero positives. This is an example of someone trying too hard to be " different " and " indie " but not having the talent or vision..)
" Bang Bang " - Lady Gaga ^(( originally by Cher)) Clunky. Very musical theater heavy. Great vocals ONLY on a technique scale. Zero vocal awareness in tone or depth. Questionable vocal choice and phrasing. Maintains zero catchiness or likability from EITHER version of Cher's original 60's or 80's version. Weird vocal flex performance slightly for a song that isn't difficult to sing? But not for actual music listening.)
" Running Up That Hill " - Meg Myers ^(( originally by Kate Bush) Most of these covers of this song are pretty bad. I will give Kim Petras credit as I wanted to dislike hers but it sounded like it was done with a lot of praise and respect I didn't expect. Will I ever choose Kim's over the original? No but, I give her props. Meg on the other hand . . . delivered something not bad but just . . . I'm surprised given I actually like the vocal style Meg uses in it and wanted to love it. But it just sounds like a generic hipster cover with MOMENTS of promise. It's more angsty and angry which is fine but the rest is so sleek and modern it just doesn't sell it.Much more Indie-pop digestable but in a way that genericizes it.)
