I’m a 30yo single male from Maryland here for work until mid March and I work long and weird hours in the film industry. So far I’m liking the neighborhood. What are the go to cafes, restaurants and bars?

I’m a big soccer fan so I’d love to find a good soccer bar or pick up games for the weekends. Already made some friends at Portugalia on Ferry St for Liga Portugal but I’d like to find a Spanish bar for La Liga.

Anything else to do in the area? I have a car if there’s something interesting in a short drive.

Newark museum of art and Newark local beer are both downtown and worth a visit if you’re into either of those things. Also check out branch brook park and the cathedral basilica of the sacred heart nearby.

I recommend Portucale the restaurant on Elm Street and Suissa bakery and Cafe on Pacific.

Mampou is a good Spanish tapas place. Not so sure on the soccer end. Back in the day used to be a great soccer neighborhood but honestly I’d like recommendations myself on that these days.

Other cool places to check out: Sabor Unido, No Pao, Casa d’Paco, Bellos, The Deep Inn, Burkes tavern, Blueprint cafe, McGoverns…

Casa de Paco, little Tijuana, Ferry st or Mcwhorters bbq, Altas Horas would be my ironbound recommendations. Prob some others I'm forgetting.

McGovern's (full bar & bar food), Newark Local (just beer, sometimes local bbq truck out front), Marcos B&P (upscale restaurant with full bar) would be some other recommendations in downtown.

Not really anything that great around here unfortunately. I'm a huge footy fan, and will go to either Mulligans in Hoboken, or Legends/Football Factory in the NYC for any big games. Both easily accessible by train.

Super easy. Head down to Penn station, and you have a few options.

Can take NJ transit to Hoboken (tho more frequent out of Newark Broad st) NY Penn Station (mid town, smack in the middle of everything)

Or Path train, which can get you to Hoboken Jersey City Or multiple stops in NYC, from World Trade Center (downtown), all the way up to 33rd street (only a few blocks from NY Penn station)

Both can be absolutely painful and unreliable, but for the most part, you'll have one of them running fine. Occasionally both systems shit the bed and it's a massive clusterfuck

I just came from Mampou. Weird atmosphere after the lunch crowd left. I was the only patron and the bartender sat on their phone the whole time. Accommodating, but I had to get their attention.

Asked another employee about the soccer bars and they couldn’t give me one bar unfortunately. I’d figure with the large Portuguese & Latin American population there would be more excitement around the game

No problem.

Plenty to see in Newark, but definitely recommend you get out to Hoboken at least once(most bars per SQ mile in the US I believe), and Grove St in Jersey City has tons of bars/restaurants too

The RedBulls have 2 home matches in March (4th & 18th). You can probably walk to the arena.

Definitely check out Jersey City and NYC while you are here. The PATH train is only 2.75 and runs 24 hours.

Portucale on Elm is the best bar to watch a game in a setting where old timers will talk to a new transplant like yourself.

McGoverns Tavern is a great pub with great servers. Always have a great time there. La Cocina across the street is also really good food and the amount of food you get for the price is awesome. It’s normally enough for at least two meals. Elm Street Barbecue has the best ribs and chicken. Blueprint Cafe on Raymond Blvd. is great if your looking for breakfast, coffee, or a fresher, healthier meal. Banzai Sushi has the best ramen bowl. No Paõ has some unique hot sandwiches. Huryks Deli has the best coldcuts— great little hole in the wall. Fernandes Steakhouse and their smaller lunch place are both really good. And you can’t skip Nasto’s for the best ice cream!!

I agree. Delicias de Minas is a Brazilian bar with huge screens. Wouldn’t call it a “soccer bar” per se. Outside of the other bars mentioned, there’s only Spanish and Portuguese members only soccer clubs I think.

Since you’ll be here for a bit though. There’s plenty of more legit soccer bars in the area. Mulligans in Hoboken, 1 Republik in north Arlington, and a quick train ride to NYC for a bunch more (Slainte, mchales, football factory, banter bar etc)
