This is back from when they made baby oil from real babies.

That's why I could never use it, the image of them being put in the oil presses was just horrible. Like you're never supposed to ask what's in hot dogs :(

I'm an old guy and was enthralled with Ali Mac Graw, when I saw her in Love Story. She's older now and so am I, and I think that her marriage to Ryan O'Neil sort of slowed things down, although she made more movies.

I liked her and Steve McQueen in The Getaway and I really should see it again. . Seems like that was a long time ago.

I'm 74 years old and Ali is 84 years old this year. Go figurel.

At 74, do you still use the baby oil?

3

LovelockMike t1_j9ziccr wrote

No, darn it. I pretty much gave that up a decade or two back...

Back in the day when sunscreen topped out at SPF8 and it was considered safe and healthy to just wipe your skin with baby oil and go broil in the sun.

Brilliant_Jewel1924 t1_ja0fwco wrote

I remember those days. Fortunately, I stopped cooking myself long enough to save my skin.

Ah, the blissful days before everybody knew the sun hated us, and baby oil was considered "suntan lotion".

I remember being very little and woman using baby oil and iodine (scream). Also making their own reflectors using a double album cover and aluminum folder.

I remember my aunt (mid 60s now) saying how they'd just slather that shit on and bake at the beach lol back in the 70s and 80s

So bad for your skin..

butterflypoo69 OP t1_j9wpebm wrote

People really had no idea, they thought baking in the sun was healthy and good for you. Scary to think of now :(

brutalistsnowflake t1_j9z020f wrote

Right? I did it. I even had a sun lamp.

Remember tanning places? And the head only things that you stuck your face right into? Scream, I did a few of those in my time :-0

2

brutalistsnowflake t1_j9zxn3n wrote

Oh yeah. Me too, I had a membership at a tanning place. I suffered from acne and thought it would help, turns out that's not true at all. It's a miracle I dont look like an old lizard now.! Lol!

I can’t believe they still allow those things 😞

This is why skin cancer in boomers is epidemic

butterflypoo69 OP t1_j9x8ai9 wrote

Actually not just boomers, pretty much every demographic. The generation prior to when the Boomers started being born in 1946 probably had it worst as there was no concept of sunblock.

3

DeeSusie200 t1_j9x8hnu wrote

The generation before boomers did not purposely slather themselves in oil to get a tan. I was referencing the ad

Don't forget to add the vital Iodine for color enhancement of both oil and skin.

What’s weird is I distinctly remember people doing that. Anytime you went on someone’s boat in those days, there would be a bottle of that premade. I’m of Irish descent, and I think of my relatives using this stuff, and it’s horrifying 😱

oftendreamoftrains t1_j9ybfpk wrote

Did anyone else read the ad copy? It's a little difficult to make out, but It's hilarious. It begins with 'It's summer, baby' and ends with 'Turn on your tan, baby. And you'll turn on your hero'. I love ad copy from this era. And I love Ali McGraw, such a style icon. Edit: punctuation and a word.

Back when it was a big deal, the β€œLadies Home Journal” would name someone β€œThe Most Admired Woman In The World.” If the aforementioned woman who received the honor did something β€œbad” (think Liz Taylor) she would be taken off the list completely. It was Ethel Kennedy for a few years in the late Sixties, then Ali for 1970 - 2. Off course, she β€œGotaway” with Steve and that was the end of that. Sick double standard then, and sadly still to some degree.

She’s wonderful, I love her. Also a very smart and well educated woman (Wellesley). Cheers! 😎

I recently bought a little crocheted cap at a thrift store and was telling my husband how they had been all the rage when Love Story came out. She wore one in the film. I had one then, too. Everyone called them Ali McGraw hats, and I will forever think of them that way.

And I, too, am sick of the double standard. Yes, it prevails to this day.

2

butterflypoo69 OP t1_j9yktzc wrote

She was so stylish. You still see women trying to look like her. You’re 100% accurate on the hat. Linda McCartney too some great pics of Ali and Steve back in the day πŸ“Έ

oftendreamoftrains t1_j9z4bia wrote

There's a somewhat famous series of Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash from around that time. Joni wears the same hat. Ali's wardrobe in Love Story is epic. I think she was Diana Vreeland's assistant at Vogue prior to her career taking off.

2

butterflypoo69 OP t1_j9z53gv wrote

I think I know the picture you mean.

She did in fact work at Vogue with Diana. This is a very smart and shrewd woman.

She did look great in that movie. Remember the car too? ;)

Ali went to Wellesley and graduated in 1958. While there she was part of a small local theater group. One of the members of this group was - can you guess? Erich Segal who wrote "Love Story." :-0

1

oftendreamoftrains t1_j9z8k5j wrote

Fascinating. I didn't know that about Erich Segal. I'm off to Google who did the costumes for that film. The car was great. So was the, I think plaid, coat that she wore. Big lapels.

Edit: Beige, the coat was beige. Like a camel hair tone. Not plaid.

Such a shitty actress/ movie. But it was HUGE in '71!

You know she got nominated for the best actress Oscar that year? Having nothing to do with her oily husband Robert Evans being president of Paramount at that time.

She is such an icon, you still see women dressing or styling themselves like her. She literally never goes out of style.

Her competition in β€˜71. Glenda won it, she’d superb in that film πŸŽ₯

Actress Glenda Jackson. Women in Love. Jane Alexander. The Great White Hope. Ali MacGraw. Love Story. Sarah Miles. Ryan's Daughter. Carrie Snodgress. Diary of a Mad Housewife.

Professional-Bee3805 t1_j9xv18j wrote

Yes I know. I was 12 or 13 then. I thought she, O'Neil, and Love Story were all brilliant. Then I tried to watch it 20 years later. Blech.

Plus they were 32 at the time playing 20 year old characters! And they looked 32 😎

They used to make incoming Harvard freshmen watch it all the way thru. Cruel and unusual punishment 😱
