I recently bought a little crocheted cap at a thrift store and was telling my husband how they had been all the rage when Love Story came out. She wore one in the film. I had one then, too. Everyone called them Ali McGraw hats, and I will forever think of them that way.
And I, too, am sick of the double standard. Yes, it prevails to this day.

She was so stylish. You still see women trying to look like her. You’re 100% accurate on the hat. Linda McCartney too some great pics of Ali and Steve back in the day 📸

There's a somewhat famous series of Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash from around that time. Joni wears the same hat. Ali's wardrobe in Love Story is epic. I think she was Diana Vreeland's assistant at Vogue prior to her career taking off.

I think I know the picture you mean.
She did in fact work at Vogue with Diana. This is a very smart and shrewd woman.
She did look great in that movie. Remember the car too? ;)
Ali went to Wellesley and graduated in 1958. While there she was part of a small local theater group. One of the members of this group was - can you guess? Erich Segal who wrote "Love Story." :-0

Fascinating. I didn't know that about Erich Segal. I'm off to Google who did the costumes for that film. The car was great. So was the, I think plaid, coat that she wore. Big lapels.
Edit: Beige, the coat was beige. Like a camel hair tone. Not plaid.
