Title. I go to school at Pitt and I turn 21 in April, right in the middle of finals week and my NY license expires on my 21st birthday (I do not have a passport). I went to the DMV in NY to renew it but they told me that I probably won’t get it until after my 21st, so they gave me a paper temporary ID. My question is, will I be able to buy alcohol at a liquor store/go to a bar with my expired license and temp ID, even thought they’re from out of state?

I recently purchased alcohol with my expired PA license and paper temporary, it was not a problem at all. Should be fine to do with NY ID.

Totally depends on where you go. Some places are hard-asses about it, some places don't care. You might have to try a couple times, but don't get discouraged. You'll be able to get drunk on your birthday.

Since you mention it, I would start the process to get a passport. Its a good backup for DOB verification and lasts 10 years.

There may be one bouncer/bartender/etc who's a dick about it but I'm guessing most would just wish you a happy birthday and not mention the expiration date. If you're going with friends just mention the possibility to them and you should go in first (so they can easily bounce if you get bounced)

Liquor store employee here. Any Fine Wine and Good Spirits store SHOULD accept a temporary ID. Bring the expired one for good measure.

Whether they will or not they’ll actually accept it is another question. Each store seems to be run differently even though we shouldn’t be. Or they might not card you at all. 50/50 chance of it in my experience.

I second this. Once you have a passport, it's a good backup as u/getfocused12 says, but it also will probably lead to you taking an out of country trip, even if it's "just" to Canada. You're more likely to go when you have it. And if an opportunity comes up to travel, you won't have to worry about getting the passport then and worrying whether it'll show up on time.

Worst case scenario go to the next regular town over. They will either accept or not even ask

Central PA bartender here. You have a 50/50 chance and should hope for a lenient door person and/or bartender. If anything, make sure you have debit cards or credit cards with your name and probably even your Pitt ID. Good luck and happy early birthday!

Why don’t you go to a liquor store and ask

I've been denied service more than once with an expired driver's license. I tried to explain to them if it was valid the week before, and I was old enough last week, then i could only be older than that. But they wouldn't hear it.

I have no experience with a temp ID.

I've actually been denied entry by a doorguy at a bar ca. 2006 because all I had was my passport (license was expired). Here's the conversation:

Him: What's this?

Me : It's a passport <shows him my DOB>

Him: What's it for?

Me: So you can leave and re-enter the country....

Him: Why would you want to leave the USA?

Me: <explains my friend's wedding, seeing the world, etc.>

Him: Well, I need a state-issued ID

Me : IT'S LITERALLY ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE

Him : <continues to be a jongoistic caveman while denying me entry>
