Greetings Rhode Island!

I took a “scouting trip” earlier this fall to Newport. I loved the area. It checked all the boxes of being incredibly charming, close to the water, cute downtown, and nice outdoor activities.

I’m a young (25f) professional. When I asked around as to what people do for work, I really only got two answers: hospitality/tourism and healthcare. Neither of which industries I’m interested in.

Call me crazy but I actually want a stable 9-5 office job where I work around people. Something that pays well enough to afford rent for a studio or 1 bedroom…

Are there any opportunities for that in the Newport area or am I dreaming? I have a business degree and have worked in hotel operations post grad (hence why I’m NOT interested in hospitality.)

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

A studio/1 bedroom in Newport will run you about 2k, just FYI

There are of office jobs working for the navy or one of the subcontractors: nuwc, Raytheon, etc. There's some work in Bristol and tiverton for shipbuilders and other random industry. A bit of stuff in NK near quonset in the industrial park there. Not sure of the pay though.

There are professional jobs here, but not a lot of corporate opportunities like in a big city. Larger financial services companies and law firms have satellite offices in Newport, to serve the local clientele. No one is based here. Hospitality management, on the other hand, offers opportunities with larger companies such as Newport Restaurant Group (Corp offices are in Warwick) or with Pebblebrook, which just bought Gurney's Hotel for $174 million, and they have 50 other properties in their portfolio. With your background, you could consider a corporate position in marketing or department director position with a company like that, so you're not front-of-house and dealing directly with the demanding masses. And, as others have said, defense contractors such as Raytheon and McLaughlin Research, are another option. You're right in your assessment too, Newport is an awesome place to live. Good luck!!

Financial services? Like an investment firm, money management like Edward Jones? Btw, there’s a sizable Navy community in Newport and Middletown too. Not that you’ll join the Navy, but it employs a fair number of folks.

Definitely expand your search to Middletown and Portsmouth, RI. Fall River, MA is also not a bad commute and might offer more options.

You probably won't find an office job that affords rent for a solo place in newport just saying. I bartend in town and live in a 1 bedroom and I can only afford that because I make stupid money bartending. I have it cheapish for a 1 bedroom and it's like 1585. Idk if you'll afford that on an office job when you're new in town just saying. Look up what's up newport though. They sometimes do job postings for who's hiring around town and that's a mix of random stuff and it's all people who are actively hiring

Are you set on Newport? There are some great jobs elsewhere, and depending if it's a remote position the commute to/from Newport might not be for everyone.

Check out (in no particular order) FM Global, Citizens, Fidelity, CVS. Some of these have fully remote positions open as well as at their corporate offices.

Just a thought: there are jobs in healthcare that are office and not hands-on patient care and a hospital there I think.

If you are up for the challenge, after a few years, you could add a nursing (associates) degree to your credentials and get into hospital management = no glass ceiling. You could try getting your foot in the finance department and climb from there.

That way you get an area you enjoy without settling for something that has no advancement.

Or, would Bank Trustee be a reasonable goal/option in Newport?

Please don’t choose something with limited advancement.

Finance then advance to CFO/CEO is also possible.
