I got a metal detector for my birthday 2 months ago.

There's a former patch of blackberries by me (neighbor bulldozed it)

So, I've used my detector to find a crushed can of Pepsi from 91, an MGD from the early 90s and some Safeway grape soda from 1985

Years are guesses based on logos

In Europe you could do worse. e.g. find a unexploded WW2 bomb.

The only thing 47k can change about your life is to buy out debt or allow you to max out your 401k for 2 years.

Unfortunately he will have to declare it as a “treasure” (it technically belongs to the king) so he won’t get anywhere near the value for it. Most I’ve ever found detecting is a load of tent pegs and a few coins on the beach so I’m not 100% on the process but I’m pretty sure it gets auctioned to the highest bidding museum and then he will get around 10% of whatever it fetches (minus any agreement with the land owner of the field he was searching in). Rest goes to the crown. Still a great little find though and will no doubt pay for his next detector.

In England you don't get to keep most antiquities you find.

England has specific rules about finding antiquities. But yes, they have to report the discovery and sell it to a museum. Land owner and discoverer have to split profits.

At one time, anything you found was the property of the National Trust and they could, and did, take found artifacts from the finder without compensation. Then one treasure hunter found a silver, jewel-encrusted chalice buried in a farmer’s field. The news of this treasure hunter finding the valuable chalice was printed in some British newspapers, and shortly thereafter, the National Trust knocked on the treasure hunter’s door and demanded possession of the item...offering no compensation. The treasure hunter took the National Trust to court charging that the National Trust exceeds its authority when it confiscates an item without compensation. The court agreed. Its decision was that the National Trust has the right to confiscate a found item that it deems to be of national historic value but that the organization is now required to pay the finder for the fair market value of the item.

That’s over a year of pay for some people. In one lump that could immediately stop people living pay check to pay check, maybe replace their car that keeps breaking down but they can’t afford a new payment, buy healthy foods at the grocery store instead of rice and ramen every day, pay for their kid’s college tuition….

Legally you have to have permission of the landowner to even step foot on his land with your machine otherwise it counts as trespass with intent to commit robbery and you can literally get jail time and police can seize your detector and your finds collection. Usually as part of gaining the permission you would sign an agreement with the landowner to say “we split finds over the value of £50 50/50 or 70/30” or whatever you agree on. That way if the police stop you you can produce the agreement to show you’re allowed to be there and you’re protected against any funny business if you find something good and the landowner tries to claim it’s his.

I would think you could just travel to any one of many countries and sell it there. Not sure how reporting sales goes in other places
