It could also be a last resort place, all other areas are way more polluted.. so they choose to die slowly than fast by swimming in the bronx river.

some FYI about efforts to maintain New York City’s only freshwater river.
I saw the article pop up yesterday and it’s fun for people to joke about the Bronx and stuff but it’s actually a beautiful waterway that has seen some pretty solid restoration efforts this past decade.
