Hi.

I switched employers in 2022. Each employer withhold PFML premiums. When going over the social security cap they should have stopped withholding but because it was a new employer, they didn't. So now I overpaid. How do I get a refund?

I tried WA state Care team, but they were useless and didn't understand.

Different programs, Care is not PFML. WA PFML helpline: (833) 717-2273

I dont think going over the social security cap means that you also no longer have to pay the state medical leave premium. It does make your net higher, so when they figure the percentage for the medical leave premium, it will be a larger amount than you paid previous. I doubt they are going to see it as you paid too much.

You get it back on your federal tax filing.

But how? WA has no income tax so I don't file a state return. The feds don't care about WA PFML, I'm not even sure this goes anywhere on the federal return.

Apologies. I thought you were asking about paid benefits, but on rereading your question I see you are asking about premium payments that are in excess of the income cap.

Let me inquire on that & I will come back if I can get good guidance from HR.

In the meantime the state website says this:

If you overpay your premiums, you will see a credit balance on your account. You can use this amount to pay future premiums. If the amount is over $50, you can request a refund by contacting the Customer Care Team at paidleave@esd.wa.gov or (833) 717-2273.

Have you signed into your account to see if the credit is there?
