I have a chronically stiff quadratus lumborum (been tight for a year) and would like to find a medical, physical therapy-type massage that I can get regularly. Anywhere I can get an affordable massage, maybe with a student discount? Is craigslist a good idea?

  1. Craigslist is a TERRIBLE idea.

  2. There are some massage therapy schools in the area that may be able to have students practice on you for less.

  3. Check with your insurance and/or doctor. If it's medically related they may be able to get you into a PT who also does massage.

Thanks! I just checked out the massage school and the price is pretty great.

Which massage school did you look at? I’m looking around and can’t seem to find massage services at the schools

There’s a school of massage locally, with cheaper therapists. Maybe check there?

You could also find a physical therapist who is open to doing bodywork, and not just exercises, and then use insurance to cover most of it.

CCBC Dundalk? One of the campuses- has a massage program that accepts clients.

MEND acupuncture in Canton & Remington do both acupuncture and massage. If you have insurance they accept most. I’m not sure what the cost is without it but I’m sure they can give you that information if you call.

Highly recommend HTown Wellness in Highlandtown.

Unless there was an initial injury - low back pain, or chronically tight QLs, are typically a result of an imbalance in the hips. As a result, the muscles around the hips (glutes ESPECIALLY) need to be addressed; tight hip flexors are also typically associated with tight QLs; hamstrings and inner thigh muscles should also be addressed, at the very least stretched. With massage, like most things, you're going to get what you pay for. I wouldn't rely on a student to resolve your issue.

Acupuncture is a great option as well. There is a great one in Catonsville. I've been going for about a year now, and it has drastically improved my overall quality of life..
