How is St John pronounced?

"Sinjin". I'm so, so sorry.

Why did you do this to me

I learned that from 1984's Airwolf TV show where the brother of the main character was named St. John. (The main character was named Stringfellow.)

Why? Could you please explain?
PennilynnLott t1_je6t76h wrote
I cannot explain, I can only pass on this cursed knowledge as it was passed on to me.

Apparently it’s because it’s the English version of the French name Saint-Jean which is pronounced similarly. That combined with regional accents in England changed it to Sinjin over time. (Even knowing that still upsets me. I too was pronouncing it wrong for way too long).

Thank you, that sounds equally logical and stupid.

Equally logical and stupid just about sums up the English language. A complete mess. Haha
