I'm currently in a Comp Sci program at a community college. I have an IT background, and have been really struggling with the math side of things. So I was thinking of switching to Cybersecurity, as that is what I was originally going to do anyway, but decided on CS for some reason lol.

I've been looking at Cambridge College in Boston, because it is very close to my current school so my commute wouldn't change much. I'm going to continue to look into other schools in the area.

Im not sure how applying as a transfer student really works or if I can get into the big name schools in the area so.

If anyone knows anything about Cambridge College, please let me know!

You might have better luck doing online courses and comparing how much they charge per course and what the overall cost will be. I tried going to community college but they charged absurd prices for prerequisites and they never stopped arguing with me about meeting the qualifications even though I met the qualifications. You can get a certification with Amazon I think for security. Basically do your best to keep working at a skill and keep practicing. Use Github all the time. If you need to get a good calculator that can do complicated math if you need to.

All of mine is paid for by the GI Bill

Look at Bellevue University out of Nebraska. They have a cyber program with a lot of veterans and it is 100% online. Start looking at CompTIA Security + exam as well.

I gotta take at least one class in person so my GI bill will pay for my rent

In the job market, a cert from amazon is worth far less than an actual degree.

Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology has a certificate program with no math. Can't say how it compares to Cambidge College. They are on Berkeley St in the south end.

UMASS Boston has an IT degree that might be a good fit and more reputable than Cambridge college. Presumably this would give you the option to take the CS classes that aren’t as math heavy. I think you would be wasting your GI Bill money at Cambridge College.

I haven’t looked at the curriculum for UMAS Boston but I do know it’s not a Cybersecurity degree

In the long run a more general degree may allow for more flexibility in your career. I did see that UMB iT department has a few cybersecurity classes so you could take them and learn cybersecurity while not being locked into it. Sometimes super specialization backfires on students in the long run as the industry changes over time.

How much IT experience do you have?

About 4 years. Figured I might as well go to school since it’s completely free for me as a veteran

Well as you are probably already aware there are hundreds of resources for veterans to get into cyber security, like cisa: https://niccs.cisa.gov/education-training/cybersecurity-veterans

But on a local level, I can't talk to Cambridge College, but I'll offer a small bit of work advice (for when the time comes). Look at Raytheon. They are oftentimes taking cyber interns of all levels and the veteran status helps at a company like that.

Side Question - was your MOS related to IT?

Yes

Well hell, you may be able to skip college (if you so chose to). Not suggesting you do, but it may be an option for you.

im at the point where i dont think i'd do well in an interview, so if I can go to school for free, get paid enough money to cover my bills at the same time, and learn more than I know now... it's not a bad idea to do school

Agreed. Didn't want to inquire on your financial situation, if you were in dire straits - not going and taking a job now may have been a good option. Doesn't sound like the case here.

Could you go anywhere on the GI Bill or are you set on Cambridge College? I ask because Western Governors is supposed to have a pretty good online program and they have ties to incubator programs at various fortune 500 companies.

If I attend classes in person they give me $3,081 a month to pay for bills

So unfortunately I can’t do WGU. Definitely looked into it tho

It doesn’t have to be Cambridge, I just can’t find schools I can to in person that offer a Cybersecurity program.

There’s one at Wentworth but it’s more like a Comp Sci degree with a shit ton of advanced math that I can’t do lol
