We did it Reddit.

Fuck you RMV.

Do not worry citizens, the RMV will just wait until the media attention dies down, and collect the fees from the next "visitor" that stays over 30 days in the state of MA.

Don't worry, RMV will fuck one of us over who doesn't have a story to post on local news.

Should've never been a case to begin with. I'm sure the RMV won't do shit to compensate this man for all his wasted time and resources, either. Maybe a "whoops lol" from the state, if he's lucky, but I doubt they'd even apologize to him

Worse, I bet the RMV will do nothing to ensure this sort of issue doesn't crop up again in the future.

dyslexda t1_jeglwrl wrote

Yeah, that's the real problem. If there were any accountability someone would figure out how this went so far as to require media attention to resolve it. Instead, very likely nothing will change, and maybe the next person won't think to ask Reddit/the news for help.

It should take more than an "anonymous tip" from an annoyed neighbor to set such a process in motion. And it should be easy to dismiss such a claim online by showing proof of out of state residency.

dyslexda t1_jegm20m wrote

I have no problem with that "anonymous tip" setting things in motion (though the neighbor was absolutely a nosy asshole to do it). The problem is that "things in motion" should have immediately stopped being in motion after the RMV called the guy, and he said he wasn't in MA anymore. Okay, thanks for your time, closed case.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS t1_jeh3l8i wrote

Well you should probably have to prove your residency somehow or else the idea of thwarting tax/insurance cheats would be pretty easily defeated by lying to the person on the phone.

I'm really glad it worked out for him. I hope that the state will do something, but I won't hold my breath.

Hilariously, the one guy who kept insisting that the guy wasn't telling the truth and would be "held accountable" is in the other thread still insisting that the RMV was in the right here.

No joke.

RMV charged me $100 to "reinstate" my license that I proved to them was wrongfully revoked in the first place. Got a ticket in Ohio. Dumbass cop falsely claimed I didn't show proof of the insurance that I definitely had. Sent them proof, Ohio was like "oops our bad," RMV still made me pay even though Ohio expunged the revocation.

This was my fourth trip in a couple of months and I didn't even feel like arguing with them about it anymore.

This was the obvious outcome once the press got involved and, as an added bonus, the correct outcome based on the wording of the law. I had originally assumed he had admitted to one of the exceptions that would require registration (letting a MA resident drive or using it for business), but it sounds like the RMV just messed up and didn't have any easy way to fix the mistake.

How many other fuck ups do they have right now? This one just got publicized...

Next time, RMV, fix it before it becomes a problem.

Don't let that happen again, RMV.

I'm impressed he found decent street parking without having resident plates and permits.

For a month that cost wouldn't be too different from a garage; even the most expensive parking tickets are $100 in Boston. Still sounds like he came out ahead.
