Something about seeing a monster off in the distance, and/or it noticing you, always terrifies me.

Great work, the art is incredible.

Its the inevitable “oh shit, I gotta hide, I don’t have much time.” So much uncertainty as to where you can hide, how you can hide, if even can hide, how to defend yourself or where to run, how long it’ll take to get to you, what it’ll do if or when it finds you, etc. Very nerve wracking.

it's similar to the cognitohazard aspect of some cosmic horror, where unearthing the wrong knowledge or observing the wrong entity is enough to doom you.

Hoo boy, do I have a series for you!

Like in Alone In The Dark where just reading one of the cursed books kills you. You don't have to even read all of it, and there's no real warning or indication that it's harmful/fatal.

I don't understand what you're saying, yet I have a feeling I might be interested in it.

What do you mean by "some cosmic horror"? Stories/movies? Theories in physics?

There's a god in the Lovecraft series of novels that is litterallly just a librarian but his whole deal is that he willingly shows explorers into his area and they go insane from the knowledge they learned.

Oh it's from Lord Of The Rings. Ok, thanks.

It’s very Lovecraft-ian(not sure if that’s a real word). Something huge and terrible takes note of little you. The only option is hiding, effective prolonging the terror, because there is no fighting back and they will find you eventually.

There is a collection of black and white comics which depict something very similar: There is a boy looking out his balcony with a telescope(?) and notices a monster or demon off in the distance.

The frame in which the demon notices him back gives me the same awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that this gif does at that moment. If I think of the comic I'll edit it in

edit: Here it is. Thanks to u/blamezuey for helping to dig it up

That comic has very Junji Ito vibes to it.

He’s a horror Japanese manga artist, he has a lot of horror comic stories. Actually I think they just adapted some to a Netflix series, haven’t have time to check out the Netflix series but I know the episodes are from his short stories.

Exactly the premise of a terrifying short story titled "Followed Home" in the book "The Stay-Awake Men" by Matthew M Bartlett. Just the same vibes as this animation.

I watched Child’s Play when I was 10yrs old, Chucky climbing the stair case got the goosebumps going.

TheGhostOfSamHouston t1_j6bx3bz wrote

Aight, you just described my childhood fear. That specific scene. “Chucky is coming to kill me!” Watching it as a child, I remembered I was convinced that was real fucking puppet climbing those stairs, but I watched it the other night, and seeing how much it looked like a person in a costume made me smile. It still one of the most terrifying scenes from a horror film imo
