I wish the map had a ratio for every state, though that would probably look terrible. I’m in Chicago, and there’s definitely more Sams even after their closures a few years ago, but I’d be interested to see the ratio.

In the west suburbs, the Sam's Clubs have basically disappeared, but the Costco coverage is immense.

Where’s Hawaii @ u/icywatermelons ?

Also, maybe it’s just me being nitpicky, but I thought the ratio should be red : blue / Costco : Sam’s Club. The ratio should follow the title in terms of ordering by mentioned store. Also it’d be more intuitive and would follow the map in terms of color.

Thanks for the suggestions, it makes sense and you're definitely not being nitpicky! The data didn't include stats for Hawaii though, sorry about that! Google tells me that there are 7 Costcos (4 in Oahu and 1 on each of the 3 big islands) and 2 Sam's Clubs!

More reasons I can't wait to move out of Oklahoma.. The cost of living is the only thing keeping me here. I was SO excited to finally get a Costco here in OKC. I was a Sams member because there was nothing better.. Now I drive to Costco when there are literally 4 Sams closer. Really wish they would put one in the Urban core, but a couple more years I'll be able to afford to move and it wont matter.

Personally, I like it more because of the higher variety of food and the fact that food selections are rotated a lot more often. Also, Costco focuses heavily on Asian foods which are absolutely my favorite. In my market, the people that work there are significantly better and nicer than those that work at Sams. Workers at Sams just seem like working there is a punishment of some kind. I do like how Sams has their aisles labeled though! Especially in the frozen food sections. Costco may not do this for the reason I first mentioned as they tend to rotate things out and have a bigger variety than Sams. But just a general like hey papergoods are over here or kitchen stuff over here would be nice. Not a big deal as I use Costco more often and learn the layout.

Minnesota being different from surrounding states is likely from Walmart/Sam's not wanting to encroach on Target as much (relative to Costco competing there), with Target's HQ being in Minneapolis. To another poster's point, BJ's has a strong presence in mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

I wonder how much of the differences in profitability, sales per retail location (or sales per square foot), average employee pay, retail prices, etc. between Costco and Sam's are attributable to geographic footprint and how much from actual operations or strategic decisions (likely a strong mix of both). In some ways Sam's is kneecapping itself also by frequently sharing parking lots with Walmarts.

BTW the Sam's Club blue/green logo used in the graphic is outdated, not their current design. (That said the old one depicted is more recognizable.)

If be interested to see BJs on this one. I don't know if they would beat either one except maybe in Mass

That's crazy. I live in Illinois, all the Sam's around us closed.

I don't know anyone who shops at Sam's and everyone goes to Costco.

It'd be really interesting to see this by number of members

I am a member of both, having recently joined Costco. I have been there twice, and so far, it seems about the same as Sam’s to me.

OnionMiasma t1_iuccio6 wrote

We had memberships at both for a year.

After about six months of that, we found we never went to Sam's.

I have found this a great way to trigger Costco fans. "BUT THE CAFE!" Yes, Sam's has one too.

Nitpick: Please rename your post/graph or reverse the ratios! Costco should be the first number and Sam's club the second number. Also, in the legend I would list costco first.
