Its gluten free ingredients but they don't have a separate prep area, and can't guarantee no cross contamination.

This is it. Fine for “gluten sensitivities” not OK for Celiac disease

My friend and I went out to brunch with a person who has celiac disease. We had to go to 3 restaurants before we found one with food that she could eat. We already had a reservation at a restaurant that said they could accommodate her over the phone, but that wasn’t the case when we got there. We were already seated and had to leave. My friend was surprised that I wasn’t annoyed with the whole situation but I figured it’s more frustrating and annoying for the person who has celiac.

It is . Some restaurants think that couscous is Gluten Free. It is Not.

It's pretty socially isolating because everything social revolves around food.

Man that sucks, gluten makes shit so tasty

It saps the enjoyment out of food and dining experiences

It's nice that the education on cross-contamination is improving, but unless a restaurant has a dedicated prep area for it, it's rolling the dice with every order.

This is the answer. It's prepped in the same facility using all the same equipment as their regular breads. The can clean all they want, but they can't guarantee it will be 100% contaminant free.

mikeywake t1_j68m37h wrote

Yep exactly this. I work at a pizza shop and we offer a gluten free crust but there is so much flour everywhere we absolutely cannot guarantee no cross contamination and have that printed on our menu and also tell people that when they order.

Alternative_Net8931 t1_j68n8zx wrote

It also can be in the meat as well since some meat processors add gluten to there deli meats for flavor or preservation

Kyergr t1_j66l9sx wrote

They can’t guarantee there’s been no cross contamination so they have to put that

This makes perfect sense. Imagine a peanut allergy. You can have a dish with no peanuts but if your kitchen has any peanuts in it, you can't guarantee any dish as peanut-free.

Making a gluten free food was always a pain in the kitchen, but I always felt bad for those poor souls who can't enjoy bread.

$13.50 can get you a much better sandwich elsewhere

Their brisket bbq sandwich is reeeaaalllly good though…

I order their beef and cheddar brisket w/ bacon added on the regular. $22 all in out the door (CDN) and worth every penny. Firehouse makes amazing subs.

Cutriss t1_j68iovl wrote

Good for you, sandwich aficionado, but this may be Canadian pricing. It’s not normally that expensive.

1

Wiley_Applebottom t1_j68iueh wrote

It is a generic mass produced sandwich. You don't have to be an aficionado to understand that.

−2

Cutriss t1_j68j8wl wrote

Maybe not, but I suppose it’s helpful when it comes to being snotty on the Internet. I was merely pointing out that the pricing you’re leaning on is abnormal, but clearly you’d avoid this at any price.

Not much more than a shitty subway sub. Firehouse actually has good subs.

Firehouse has AMAZING subs, yo. Gimme that beef and cheddar brisket, or that Italian sub any day of the week

HalobenderFWT t1_j68z896 wrote

Not really. They’re basic ass sammiches you can slather with a multitude of hot sauces. Been there a few times and I’ve definitely never been impressed.

Might not be American dollars, that’s a fairly standard price on food delivery apps in Canada for pretty much any footlong sandwich

Glutenless in the same way stainless steel means it stains less than regular steel, not that it doesn’t stain at all.

4

BrainSqueezins t1_j67eno3 wrote

I eat at firehouse and have yet to have a problem. As with many sub shops you can see them make it and ensure they take basic precautions; also they use boars head meats, so no fillers (possibly wheat) onthe slicer

SorryDuplex t1_j68h8w0 wrote

I worked in a restaurant that had gluten free options. The cooks had to change their gloves and use completely new cookware and utensils etc to guarantee it was gluten free. Most places won’t do that tho. The only reason we did is because the owner’s daughter had celiac so she took it super seriously.

Fire house subs if you are celiac tell them in Flagstaff they wipe counter. They even put a knife in the bag for you to cut it.

It’s a gluten free bun, but that’s it. The kitchen is not gluten free, nor is the prep area.

I thought their honesty about the size of their rolls was interesting, that they couldn’t guarantee they’d be 7 or 8 inches so they just put both in!

The real hook and ladder is the price. So expensive for what you get. Jersey mikes is similar price but way more and better. Subway is garbage but is priced like garbage. Firehouse is average at best but has the nerve to charge 80 bucks for a family of four to have a so so sized sandwich with a bag of chips. Ugh
