Hopefully some news outlet will track down the person who bought one to see if he's outraged about this.

I have one lol
I haven’t turned it on in maybe 2 years.
I better turn on and get some firmware updates before they shut it down I suppose
spirit-bear1 t1_j3xjueh wrote
Normally, they will make the updates available for a while after, but they will stop developing new updates, but who knows what will actually happen.

Yep, I'd assume it uses the same fw delivery service as the q2.

Same here. It quit working when I deleted my facebook account. Beat Saber was a lot of fun for a couple years.

I have one too. It's still pretty good using Airlink (or a usb cable) to tether it to a PC for VR, but there isn't that much good VR content.

The Quest 2 is pretty long in the tooth at this point too, so they're not really leaving Quest 1 owners with a good upgrade path.
abeeson t1_j405ngw wrote
The 3 is expected to be out this year so I'd say that's definitely the upgrade path they expect

Thank you for confirming I'm not alone in finding zero motivation to use my OG Quest headset.

We had one for our kids who really liked it. The controls started having problems right after meta bought oculus, it was unplayable after we owned it for just over a year when the shit warranty expired. We could not buy a new controller anywhere. Meta quit supporting it immediately, you could not buy parts or get service. You could buy a used controller on eBay for around $150 dollars at the time, and then just hope the same thing did not happen. We got a raw deal on that thing.

Meta has owned Oculus since before the Rift came out, and that was back in 2016.
im_thatoneguy t1_j3xwulq wrote
Yeah I have a perfectly functional Oculus Go which I want to use to watch movies and Netflix on but can't operate the menu because there are no controllers available.
bicameral_mind t1_j3wph93 wrote
I have one, it was certainly really cool at the time, but firmly a gen 1 product with way too little power. Amazing they got it working at all TBH. OLED screens and full IPD adjustment are nice though.
JelloSquirrel t1_j3xsz96 wrote
Still one of the best headsets for tethering to a PC.
Gaeus_ t1_j3xwax0 wrote
Yuuup.
Until they just kill it with an obligatory update for the pc software
JelloSquirrel t1_j3xwjqh wrote
Probably, hopefully someone can jailbreak it into being just a PC headset. Unfortunately there aren't many good options that are wireless with inside out tracking and the quest hardware is so affordable and high end specs.

I have one. Bought it in January of 2020, and I still use it.
It's pretty crappy that they stopped producing replacement hardware just a little over a year after it came out. As for the part about discontinuing updates, I think I prefer that. The alternative is that they keep pushing features made for the OQ2 until the OQ1 can no longer run the games that worked three years ago.
Oahkery t1_j3yd6tv wrote
Yep. I broke a controller and can't get a replacement, it sucks.
tkmorgan76 t1_j3yg4bs wrote
I'm hoping my OG Quest can survive until the Quest 3 is announced. One controller already has a cracked ring being held together with superglue, but I don't want to buy an OQ2 only to have Meta abandon it twelve months from now.
Edit: I'm curious about the down votes, considering Meta's precedent on the subject.

Got 2 for my kids, Christmas 2020. They've probably had thousands of hours of use, they love them. Not sure why all the hate (apart from the account stuff). It's a great toy for a certain age range (probably 10-15).
I'd be upset but my kids are transitioning into PC games now.

VR is not recommended for children under 13yrs. Especially with a lot of the interactions in VR lobbies, I'd say it's questionable to allow children under 16yrs to use. Ultimately, it's up to the parents though.

Humm.. I am not sure how much they differ from normal game lobby's, but a major problem is caused by screaming kids not adults I think

Exactly my point. Screaming kids yelling obscene and racist comments in the ears of other impressionable children. It's not hard to see how this would be a problem. Again, it's ultimately up to the parents to do their own research and make their own decisions regarding their own children.

I mean I remember when it came out and they seemed to be pretty popular since you didn't have to worry about the sensor setup and all that crap with the first one. I bet a lot of people are pissed (if it didn't already break, that is).

I'm upset that I turned on my Oculus Go, which I paid actual money for under the understanding that it would not require a Facebook account to function, and learned that it will now require a Facebook account to function. Even to just side-load 360 photos from my drone apparently.
