While waiting for the much anticipated release of Baldurs Gate 3 I'm looking for a good CRPG that has a good mixture of combat and story.

I started playing Divinity 2 OS and while I really like the combat, the story has been holding me back from getting into the game.
The writing is pretty good but its more the tone of the story. Coming from baldurs gate 1/2 and the darker world they are set in, DOS:2 feels almost childish in a way. (Which is why I'm so excited for BG3. It's everything I loved about DOS:2 with a darker world).

What are some CRPG games with a great story and good combat system? I'm looking for something that's more "adult" sort of like Baldurs Gate 1/2.

Also feel free to mention your favorite CRPG in general if you want!

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous deals with hunting down Demons as a crusader imbued with the powers of a god or god-like creature.

Combat DoS2. Story, I feel like I'm in the minority but I really liked Pillars Of Eternity.

If you didn't like the style of DoS2 you might like PoE. It still has humor but it's overall much more serious, as you would probably expect from a central premise of kids being born without souls (effectively vegetables completely incable of looking after themselves).

CRPG's generally not known for amazing combat.

Pathfinder games are probably what you're looking for if you want the more modern Baldur's Gate experience that isn't Baldur's Gate 3.

But I wouldn't say combat is all that much better. More modern, but it's based on a very similar ruleset.

If you're going down that road, You may as well go further back and play all the top rated games in the genre. Neverwinter Nights 2 still holds up decently well, Mask of the Betrayer Expansion is still one of the best story contents for any CRPG ever made. Pillars of Eternity is solid, Tyranny is a very interesting twist on the standard fantasy story from the perspective of the evil side.
